Walking stick

An electric cattle prod looks a little like a walking stick with an attached battery. A potential from the tip of the stick is applied to a cow s flank, and the induced current hurts the animal. The cow moves where prompted to avoid a reapplication of the pain, thereby simplifying the job of cowherding. 

Items of general utility which have been held to he acceptable gifts to doctors as being inexpensive and of relevance to their work include pens, pads, diaries, nail brushes, surgical gloves, desk trays, calendars, a peak flow whistle, walking sticks and desk clocks.

Walking sticks may be made of a single stem, or may be composites of plant and other materials. From the top these are made of stacked rings of horn, cane, wood, and horn—wood. 

Hamer was an enthusiastic walker, but a serious accident in 1964 and another one in 1971 meant that her mobility was reduced to local walks with the aid of a walking stick. However, she was able to maintain her other interest, gardening, until shortly before her death on 29 April 1980 at the age of 85. 

Horn has been widely used for stick dressing, that is the art of making a decorative - often carved - handle or knob on a walking stick or cane. Curved rams horn lends itself to this craft as it has approximately the right shape and needs only to be compressed by dry heat and pressure to make it solid (Fig. 7.3). 

The walking-stick shotgun described In Issue II PKA can easily be turned into a yawara stick that Is deadlier than any martial arts weapon ever taught in self-defense schools. 

The walking stick shotgun made from water pipe which was featured in PMA jf1 could be a very handy weapon, except that it s unsafe to carry. Besides the danger, it could be very embarrassing as well as a detriment to your continued freedom to have your walking stick either fall apart or go off at the wrong time. 

He was so confused and felt so ashamed of himself that he left his walking-stick in the shop s rack and hurried straight off, so as to get into another neighborhood as quickly as possible.

DDT was first synthesized in 1874, for no purpose other than to exist, by the German Chemist Othmar Zeidler. In 1939, Dr. Paul Muller independently reproduced DDT in his lab, and after various experiments to determine it s possible uses, found that DDT quickly killed flies, aphids, mosquitoes, walking sticks and potato beetles. It was quickly patented in Switzerland in 1940, England in 1942 and the U.S. in 1943. In 1942 it was proven to kill body lice without any adverse effect on humans, and so it was used by every Allied trooper during World War II. DDT has been banned world-wide since 1972, but is still available in some third-world countries. 

Though the production of the poisoned dart gun created a sensation, other witnesses were to follow Colby who would describe many other devices. There were, it appeared, weapons which could be used to contaminate roads or railway tracks with biological agents, pens which would fire poison darts or spray gas into a room, umbrellas and walking sticks which would do the same. In fact the shellfish toxin represented only a tiny part of the arsenal which had been developed to wage clandestine chemical and biological warfare. 

During the 1800s, physicians carried walking sticks tightly wrapped with strips of leather. Why ... 

Pain relievers were scarce in those days. When a physician had to perform a particularly painful procedure, he jammed his walking stick sideways into the patient s mouth. The unfortunate soul would bite down on the stick and endeavor to cope with the pain. It was sort of like biting on a bullet. 

Plastics components are now used in a number of appliances such as crutches, walking sticks, and wheelchairs. The comfort of the product is an important consideration in all of these applications. An example is BASF s comfy crutch, which uses the company s Ultramid KR4412 nylon for the handle component. 

A number of monoterpenes are used as defensive compounds by the walking stick insect Anisomorpha bupresti-odes and the ant Acanthomyops claviger. The compounds are apparently synthesized within the insect. Other allomonal compounds (57-59) produced by ants are probably terpene derived. a-Pinene (14) is used by some termites for defense.
