Dressing sticks

Ivory and antler were, together with horn, popular materials for stick dressing - the art of making handles for canes and umbrellas. Bone was less used in this format as it is hollow and therefore difficult to carve into a handle, but sections of round, hollow bone have frequently been used on the cane itself as a spacer between the handle and the stick. [Pg.92]

Horn has been widely used for stick dressing, that is the art of making a decorative - often carved - handle or knob on a walking stick or cane. Curved rams horn lends itself to this craft as it has approximately the right shape and needs only to be compressed by dry heat and pressure to make it solid (Fig. 7.3). [Pg.114]

The patina of hom is retained by handling it, hence it is a good material for use in stick dressing. [Pg.115]

From the old Sin Came menu, feast on the portobello and corn quesadillas stuffed with roasted poblano and red peppers, caramelized onions, and a rich blend of cheeses. Also popular is the Thai salad of field greens, scallions, carrots, peppers and chopped peanuts served alongside rice sticks dressed with a Thai peanut sauce. Those who eat light meat dishes will enjoy the sesame-seared tuna topped with grilled pineapple. Dinners are preceded by either red corn chips with a jumping house salsa or a basket of the day s fluffy homemade bread with a sweet potato spread. Both were excellent freebies. [Pg.16]

These bums can be quite painful and can become infected easily. They should be cleaned with a non-abrasive solution, treated with antibiotic ointment such as silver sulfadiazine (Silvadine), protected with a non-stick dressing, and the patient should be given an analgesic based on the amount of area burned and the pain experienced. [Pg.405]

If winemakers corked their bottles like some people cork their flasks, there d be few oneophiles and we d probably judge good years for salad dressings rather than wines. You don t just take a new cork and stick it down into the neck of the flask, vial, or what have you. You must press the cork first. Then as it expands, it makes a very good seal and doesn t pop off. [Pg.52]

Books which have been treated with dressing containing a spirit such as hexane need to be set out to allow evaporation, but those given the recommended neat s foot oil and lanolin can be piled with paper between them to prevent sticking. The dressing should have been absorbed after two days, usually less. A fairly soft cloth should be used to polish the leather and remove oil residue, especially from the less ab-... [Pg.23]

Mepilex and Melolin are not always easy to find, and I therefore had to look for another type of cheap and readily available protective dressing. I then went back to using sterile white Vaseline . Applying a thin coat of sterile white Vaseline to the BSG turns it into a paste that is easily spread with a tongue depressor and sticks to the skin (Figure 21.17). [Pg.156]

The sterile gauze does not stick to the skin too much, and can usually be removed easily by drawing it back smoothly and carefully. If the dressing sticks in places, it should not be pulled off instead, the doctor should cut around the part that is stuck to the skin and leave it in place (Figure 21.19). Vaseline can be applied to this area to help the... [Pg.157]

The dressing is sticking slightly it should not be pulled off -rather, the doctor should cut around the part that is sticking. [Pg.157]

The anterior hairline is a special area. A first strip of Leukoflex is placed directly on the patient s skin, at the edge of the hairline. Any hair sticking out over this edge should be cut off so that it does not get pulled out when the mask is removed 24 hours later. A hairnet is placed on the patient s hair. An impermeable or plastic shower cap should not be used, as it holds the sweat on the scalp and makes the occlusion very uncomfortable for the patient. The (loose) elastic edge of the hairnet is positioned on the first strip of Leukoflex . A second layer of Leukoflex holds the elastic of the hairnet in place the net thus forms an integral part of the occlusive mask and can be used to pull the whole dressing off smoothly and painlessly when the time comes to remove the mask. [Pg.285]

It should be noted that instead of dressing the molecular states g and s by 1 and 0 photons, respectively, we could use any photon numbers p and p — 1. The corresponding matrix elements are than proportional to p. In processes pertaining to linear spectroscopy it is convenient to stick with photon populations 1 and 0, keeping in mind that all observed fluxes should be proportional to the incident photon numberp or, more physically, to the incident field intensity fo P- With this in mind we will henceforth use the notation g, k) (or g, m if the incident direction is not important for the discussion) as a substitute for g, Ik)-... [Pg.643]

The area should be left open after the medication is applied. An adherent dressing may stick to the area and cause further irritation of the affected area. [Pg.253]
