Martial arts

I live for those hours each week in my martial arts class when I get to break boards. It helps counter the way I feel the rest of the time. I carry so much pent up anger and pain from the hundreds of times that people have jeopardized my life and my safety by their behavior, and kicking is an outlet. Some people can find that outlet through prayer. For me, it takes prayer and breaking some boards— hours of forceful, physical exercise, when I m not sick. My instructor says that I may be able to test for black belt next year, when I m 50. I m hoping to enter the second half of my life with better skills and a better attitude. [Pg.96]

It has been said the person with the most flexibility wins. This is obviously true in the physical manifestations of conflict such as the martial arts. Tai Chi and Hop Ki Do teach the student to move with the attacker s energy and simply re-direct it. They teach the metaphor that wood breaks, water bends. Whether you are pursuing a goal or having a discussion with your spouse, the ability to change on the fly is essential. Flexibility is the tendency to have many options to succeed. [Pg.65]

Edvard L. Allen s system of Jiu-Jitsu (Nov Knovn as Judo) is one of the oldest and most basic of the martial arts This course is the simplest, designed for the ranK amateur vith no previous experience in any sort of combat It was taught in this manner to America s service men. The idea from the Army s point of viev, was to train them fast and get them to the front. It obviously worked, as many reports came back from the Pacific that in hand-to-hand encounters with the Japanese, the good big man was better than the good little man. [Pg.91]

When the moves in this basic course are mastered, you can handle just about any situation which might put you at risk. Later, if you want to go professional, you will find it much easier to adapt to any of the more complex martial arts. [Pg.91]

Developing the body/instinctive brain also leads to the development of a special kind of will power, one that does not depend on the push of strong emotional desire to win or brutish stubbornness, but on steadiness, skillfulness, and clarity of intent. To those of us whose body/instinctive brains are poorly developed, the feats of skill in internal martial arts like Aikido often seem miraculous. [Pg.153]

The basis of the group should be a martial arts school. This would not be an Oriental martial arts school, cluttered vith alien tradition, discipline, foreign phrases and various uniforms and belts All that is nonsense to one simply wanting to learn to fight. [Pg.7]

Actually, most people are Intimidated by the idea of training for something they may never have a need for. How often have you been assaulted Do you hang around in bars and loiter in slum neighborhoods If your answer to all three is in the negative, martial arts training will simply fit you to protect your territory from likely marauders as our system goes from recession to depression. [Pg.7]

Getting back to starting a group first develop something to attract the kind of people you want. This would be a martial arts school which would be affordable, informal and effective. Give an office worker a place he can go to three nights a week and go from Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) to lethal combat in easy stages and you ll have all the customers you can handle. [Pg.8]

Say you have no experience in martial arts. That s best actually since you won t have to unlearn a lot of nonsense you might have picked up from a formal school. [Pg.8]

Most towns have empty stores on the square or near it which can be rented cheaply. All you need are a couple of wrestling mats a sign reading American Martial Arts and some newspaper ads. All my books will retail at 22.00 each and with 50% off to dealers, you would make 100% clear profit, since you would sell direct. The students who bought every book would be those most aware of the state of the world. These would be the most likely candidates for a oommunity defense group. These would also be the most likely to go from Jiu-Jitsu to the more lethal aspects of American Martial Arts, including im.provised weaponry. (You would have to let your students learn improvised weaponry on their own, as that subject would put you on very shaky legal ground). [Pg.9]

These martial arts are made up of a series of movements, usually coordinated with breathing. Watching an experienced tai chi practitioner is like watching a beautiful choreographed dance. While it often does not translate well into our hectic North American lives, yoga (like the martial arts above) is an aspect of a broader lifestyle that promotes balance, harmony, and moderation, as well as care of our bodies, minds, and spirits. Will you be less likely to scream at your spouse after a yoga session I have no proof, but my instincts say yes Yoga, like walking, tai chi, and qigong, has a healing effect on your emotions and moods as well as on your body. [Pg.121]

The usefulness of accelerometers in characterising movement is well established. (2006) used a combination of wired accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers and temperature sensors to characterise martial arts movements and found that the system could recognise movements in real time and could enable differentiation of expertise levels. [Pg.182]
