Vertical cantilever pumps (without submerged bearings)... 

This is very low. and since the engineer must avoid cavitations, he or she may consider the use of a submersible slurry pump or a vertical cantilever pump instead of a horizontal pump on the shore. 

Vertically snspended cantilever sump pumps are designated as Type VS5. 

For vertically suspended pumps with shafts exposed to liquid and running in bushings, the shaft shall be 12 percent chrome, except for Classes S-9, A7, A-8, and D- 1. Cantilever (Type VS5) pumps may utihze AlSl 4140 where the service liquid will allow. 

All sodium vane pumps are vertical. This is dictated by the necessity to seal the shaft reliably where it penetrates the pump body. In early sodium pumps the lower radial bearing was placed above the sodium. This design was chosen because of the lack of experience of operating bearings in sodium, while the required characteristics allowed an acceptable shaft overhang. For this reason these were termed "cantilever" pumps. They turned out to be sufficiently compact, and they utilized bearings proved in other applications. It is important also that cantilever pumps can operate as gas blowers when the reactor is initially heated with gas.
