To overcome these difficulties, drilling fluids are treated with a variety of mud lubricants available from various suppHers. They are mostly general-purpose, low toxicity, nonfluorescent types that are blends of several anionic or nonionic surfactants and products such as glycols and glycerols, fatty acid esters, synthetic hydrocarbons, and vegetable oil derivatives. Extreme pressure lubricants containing sulfurized or sulfonated derivatives of natural fatty acid products or petroleum-base hydrocarbons can be quite toxic to marine life and are rarely used for environmental reasons. Diesel and mineral oils were once used as lubricants at levels of 3 to 10 vol % but this practice has been curtailed significantly for environmental reasons. 

Stable aqueous emulsions were prepared consisting of vegetable oils and fatty acids, nonionic surfactants and deionized water, and prehomogenized with the Fisher Sonic Dismembrator and completed with the Silverson Flomogenizer (emulsifier turbine). 

At a concentration of 0.1 %, chlorocresol may be completely inactivated in the presence of nonionic surfactants, such as polysorbate 80. However, other studies have suggested an enhancement of antimicrobial properties in the presence of surfactants. Bactericidal activity is also reduced, due to binding, by cetomacrogol, methylcellulose, pectin, or cellulose derivatives. In emulsified or solubilized systems, chlorocresol readily partitions into the oil phase, particularly into vegetable oils and higher concentrations will be required for efficient preservation. ... 

Bubble baths usually contain anionic and nonionic surfactants along with alcohols and preservatives. Bath salts may contain borax, while bath oils contain vegetable and mineral oils.

Several other food emulsions can be quoted, such as coffee whiteners and cake emulsions. Coffee whiteners are O/W emulsions containing vegetable oils and fats covering the size range 1-5 pm and an oil volume fraction of 10-15%. The aqueous continuous phase contains proteins, e.g. sodium casinate, carbohydrates, e.g. maltodextrin, salts and hydrocolloids. The emulsifying system consists of blends of nonionic and anionic surfactants with adsorbed protein. 

Surfactants belong to a group of products where a low price is crucial, and therefore they are usually synthesized from coarsely defined mineral oil fractions or vegetable oils both of which represent (sometimes complex) mixtures (Fig. 12.32). Cationic and anionic surfactants are readily detected by ESI, but it also serves well for the detection of nonionic surfactants which tend to form [M-ralkali]" or [M-H]" ions, respectively [153-157].
