Valproates sodium

Valproate Sodium Valproate sodium is an older AED that was released as an intravenous preparation (Depacon ) in 1996. Although it is not FDA-approved for SE, its use has been documented in various types of SE including generalized tonic-clonic, myoclonic, and non-convulsive SE.22,23 Reports indicate... [Pg.466]

Valproic acid and divalproex sodium (a 1 1 molar combination of valproate sodium and valproic acid) can reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of headaches by at least 50% in up to 65% of migraineurs. [Pg.623]

Valproate sodium injection is indicated as an IV alternative in patients for whom oral administration of valproate products is temporarily not feasible. [Pg.1238]

Injection For IV use only. Administer as a 60-minute infusion (but not more than 20 mg/min) with the same frequency as the oral products. Use of valproate sodium injection for periods of more than 14 days has not been studied. Switch patients to oral valproate products as soon as it is clinically feasible. [Pg.1239]

Rapid infusion of IV valproate sodium has been associated with an increase in adverse events. [Pg.1239]

Conversion from oral products to injection When switching from oral products, the total daily dose of valproate sodium injection should be equivalent to the total daily dose of the oral product. Closely monitor patients receiving doses near the maximum recommended P.722... [Pg.1239]

Acute head injuries A study evaluating the effect of IV valproate in the prevention of posttraumatic seizures in patients with acute head injuries found a higher incidence of death in valproate treatment groups compared with the IV phenytoin treatment group. Until further information is available, it seems prudent not to use valproate sodium injection in patients with acute head trauma for the prophylaxis of posttraumatic seizures. [Pg.1244]

Children See Warning Box. The safety and efficacy of divalproex sodium for the treatment of acute mania has not been studied in individuals younger than 18 years of age. Divalproex sodium extended-release tablets are not recommended in children. Use of valproate sodium injection has not been studied in children below 2 years of age. [Pg.1245]

Valproic acid, valproate sodium, and (DVP) are carboxylic acid-derivative anticonvulsants. Divalproex sodium is a stable coordination compound consisting of valproic acid and valproate sodium in a 1 1 molar ratio (AHFS, 2000). It is a pro-drug of valproate, dissociating into valproate in the GI tract (AHFS, 2000), and a simple branched-chain carboxylic acid (w-dipropylacetic acid) with antiepileptic activity against a variety of types of seizures (Beydoun et al., 1997). Divalproex sodium has been approved for treating adults with simple and complex absence seizures (Mattson et al., 1992), and for mania. It has shown efficacy across a broad spectrum of BD subtypes (i.e., pure mania, mixed mania, and rapid cycling) (Pope et al., 1991 Bowden et al., 1994). [Pg.317]

Valproic acid. Although its exact mechanism of action remains uncertain, valproic acid (also valproate sodium, or valproate) may inhibit sodium and/or calcium channel function and perhaps thereby boost GABA inhibitory action as well as reduce glutamate excitatory action (Fig. 7—23). A unique and patented pharmaceutical formulation of valproic acid, called Depakote, reduces gastrointestinal side effects. [Pg.268]
