Sodium valproate Depakote

Mood Stabilizers. Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), valproic acid (Depakene), sodium valproate (Depakote), and carbamazepine (Tegretol) are most often used by psychiatrists to treat the bipolar disorders. These so-called mood stabilizers are also used to treat impulsivity and agitation in a variety of psychiatric disorders including dementia, certain personality disorders, and the disruptive behavior disorders of childhood. [Pg.248]

Although it is marketed as both valproic acid (Depakene) and as sodium valproate (Depakote), it is the valproate ion that is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is the active form. [Pg.379]

Valproic acid. Although its exact mechanism of action remains uncertain, valproic acid (also valproate sodium, or valproate) may inhibit sodium and/or calcium channel function and perhaps thereby boost GABA inhibitory action as well as reduce glutamate excitatory action (Fig. 7—23). A unique and patented pharmaceutical formulation of valproic acid, called Depakote, reduces gastrointestinal side effects. [Pg.268]

Valproate is available as valproic acid (Depakene), divalproex sodium (Depakote), and valproate sodium (Depacon) for IV use. Its AED properties were discovered ... [Pg.788]
