Initially, Li batteries used a liquid electrolyte, necessitating the use of a robust case for safety. It is now used in the ionized form. Figure 23.7 shows a typical Li ion cell utilizing a Li20 cathode and a carbon compound anode separated by a microporous membrane, using a non-aqueous electrolyte such as a Li salt dispersed in a mixture of alkyl carbonates. Since the non-aqueous electrolytes can be flammable. Valence Technology has developed the Li ion polymer battery using liquid lithium ion electrochemistry in a matrix of conductive polymers that eliminate free electrolyte within the cell. [Pg.963]

Enova battery-dominant FC shutde buses [40] were demonstrated at the Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, and were evaluated by NREL. Such FC HEBs currently operate in the Denali National Park, Alaska, using the Valence Technology XP-U-Charge Saphion LFP batteries for improved safety and thermal stability. [Pg.189]

Valence Technology Inc. is a manufacturer of lithium iron magnesium phosphate battery packs (U-Charge XP of 12, 18 or 36 V) dedicated to electric bikes, scooters, cars and marine applications. According to the producer, this battery offers higher safety with twice the runtime and less than half the mass of similar size lead-acid batteries. On July 12th 2012 Valence filed for bankruptcy protection the company expects to reorganize itself and continue production of its battery systems. [Pg.535]

Valence Technology are now advancing toward commercializing a lithium rechargeable battery based on the Bellcore technology, although other efforts have focused on a new gelled system [125-127]. This electrolyte is a radiation-cross-linked polymer formed from a mixture of Hquid prepolymer compounds, typically PEO-based acrylates, which have crossHnkable unsaturated centers, a... [Pg.648]
