Uvitex

Lawrence and Ducharme [489] have described a fast, simplified method for the detection of fluorescent whiteners in polymers, in which the polymer dissolution was applied directly to the thin layer. Also the separation of optical brighteners (Leucopur EGM, Azur 4, Azur 5, Hostalux ABC, Uvitex OB, Eastobrite OB) from plastics and migration into water and olive oil was studied by HPTLC on RP-18 silica using various mobile phase mixtures and UV detection [490]. 

By their nature, many UV absorbers are amenable to analysis by fluorimetric analysis. In many instances visible fluorescence techniques are less subject to interference by other polymer additives in a polymer extract than are UV methods of analysis. In fluorescence analysis (ex at 367 nm, em at 400-440 nm) of a PS/Uvitex OB chloroform dissolution AOs such as Ionol CP, Ionox 330, Polygard and Wingstay T/W do not interfere detection limit of 10 ppm [41].

Polymer films applied to wool as shrinkproofing treatments can also be selectively stained with optical brighteners and then detected by fluorescence microscopy. The levelness of their application can also be tested in this way the wool sample is treated with a 0.5% solution of the optical brightening agent Ciba Uvitex BHT 180% for 30 min at 0- 2 °C (cooled with ice) at a liquor ratio of about 1 100, then rinsed three times for half a minute each with cold water and dried. After UV excitation the polymer film can be recognized by its strong blue fluorescence. ...
