David et al. [184] have shown that cool on-column injection and the use of deactivated thermally stable columns in CGC-FID and CGC-F1D-MS for quantitative determination of additives (antistatics, antifogging agents, UV and light stabilisers, antioxidants, etc.) in mixtures prevents thermal degradation of high-MW compounds. Perkins et al. [101] have reported development of an analysis method for 100 ppm polymer additives in a 500 p,L SEC fraction in DCM by means of at-column GC (total elution time 27 min repeatability 3-7 %). Requirements for the method were (i) on-line (ii) use of whole fraction (LVI) and (iii) determination of high-MW compounds (1200 Da) at low concentrations. Difficult matrix introduction (DMI) and selective extraction can be used for GC analysis of silicone oil contamination in paints and other complex analytical problems. [Pg.198]

Clariant businesses are organised into five divisions pigments and additives masterbatches textile, leather and paper chemicals functional chemicals, and finally life science and electronic chemicals. Several polymer additive products have been mentioned already in Chapter 5. They include waxes, UV and light stabilisers, antioxidants, antistatic agents, flame retardants and phosphorus flame retardants. Some additives are targeted at other industries besides plastics. The company claims to be the world leader in pigments. [Pg.169]

Plastics contain additives such as heat and light stabilisers, antioxidants, UV-absorbers, lubricants and plasticisers, which cannot be used in any device/item to be placed inside the body. However, these additives are absolutely necessary for the processing and... [Pg.17]

For outdoor applications, additives such as UV-absorbers and light stabilisers are generally used during compounding and are transparent to solar radiation but immune to the destructive effect of UV radiation. [Pg.20]

SEC suffers from poor resolution and low sensitivity [5], while GC is limited by the high molecular weight and polar nature of many antioxidants and light stabilisers, which are designed to be reactive and so decompose when exposed to heat [9]. HPLC the most widely used instrumental method also has limitations [10-12]. HPLC lacks a simple sensitive universal detector that is compatible with all liquid mobile phases. UV or fluorescence detectors, which are commonly used, require that additives have a chromophoric moiety, while the universal refractive index detector only functions under isocratic conditions. As a result, Vargo and Olson have coupled HPLC with mass spectrometry (MS) for this type of application by using a moving belt interface [13]. [Pg.291]

Oligomeric hindered amine light stabilisers, such as Tinuvin 622 and Chimassorb 944, resist satisfactory analysis by conventional HPLC and have required direct UV spectroscopic analysis of a polyolefin extract [596], PyGC of an extract [618,648], or SEC of an extract [649]. Freitag et al. [616] determined Tinuvin 622 in LDPE, HDPE and PP by saponification of the polymer dissolution in hot toluene via addition of an... [Pg.155]

NMR spectroscopy is most effective in qualitative analysis when the samples examinated are substantially pure compounds and has been used to confirm the theoretically predicted low-energy conformations of the Af-acylated hindered amine light stabiliser Tinuvin 440 [210]. Trace amounts of PDMS (quantification limit 0.1 ppm) in plastic additives, dyes and pigments were determined by 111 NMR after Soxhlet extraction [211]. ll NMR was also used for the detection of octadecanol, an impurity in Irganox PS 802 (3,3 -dioctadecyl thiodipropionate). NMR has identified the nature of a supposedly UV stabiliser of empirical formula C17H18N3CIO [44] (Scheme 5.2). [Pg.332]

Commercially produced polyethylene and polypropylene have inherently limited stability to high temperatures and UV light and require stabilisation to survive the melt processing, fabrication and end-use conditions. [Pg.122]

Light stabilisers also prevent photodegradation. UV absorbers such as hydroxybenzophenone or hydroxyphenyl triazole types, operate by absorbing and dissipating UV radiation prior to potential degradation of the polymer. No permanent chemical change occurs, so activity is retained. Hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS) are also used but their activity is not particularly well understood (80). [Pg.24]

Two groups of anti-oxidants are of practical importance hindered phenol light stabilisers (HPLS) and hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS). Examples are shown in Fig. 13.7 and the mechanism of the radical trapping reaction is shown in Fig. 13.8. They are often combined with UV absorbents (for partly synergistic effects) and mostly used for the fibre protection. [Pg.152]
