Azoles are not very soluble at acidic pH levels (less than 0.5 % solubility) but are increasingly so under alkaline pH conditions. These products usually are supplied as the sodium salt. For example, TTA is available as a 50% sodium salt solution under the trade name Cobratec TT-100/T-50-S from PMC Specialties, Inc. It is also available as a powder and 80% strength product under the names Beldene 511 and 512 from BioLabs/Great Lakes Chemical Corp. (The brand originally was held by Ciba-Geigy, then FMC, and now BioLabs/GLC.)... 

The most widely known of these tracer polymers are the Trasar products from Nalco, of which the latest offering is NexGuard , a polyacrylic sulfonate (PAS) designed for high-pressure operation. Other tracer polymer systems include Optidose (from Rohm and Haas Company) and Bel-Trak (Biolab/Water Additives Division of Great Lakes Chemical Corp.). 

This article reports on two related pieces of news firstly that Albemarle Corp. of the USA has introduced a new reactive flame retardant, Saytex RX 8500 , as a replacement for pentabromodiphenyl ether (penta-BDE) in the production of flame-retardant PU foam. Secondly that Great Lakes Chemical Corp., the only manufacturer of penta-BDE, has announced plans to voluntarily phase out and cease production of this, and also octa-BDE, at the end of 2004.

A new corrosion inhibitor, introduced in the late 1980s by the Ciba-Geigy Water Additives Business (then owned by FMC Corp. and now owned by Great Lakes Chemical Corp.) and described as a hydroxyphosphonocar-boxylic acid, quickly found application as a building-block component of many All Organic cooling water treatment formulations. 

The test kit is based on immunoassay techniques and the method takes about 10 minutes to provide an analysis. A unique tag, permanently attached to the polymer, changes the color of special test strips exposed to ppm levels of polymer. The strips indicate the amount of tagged polymer that is present, without interference from other additives and contaminants. This technology is not currently available for continuous inhibitor detection, but given the importance of AH Organic Programs, there is little doubt that further developments will take place. The Water Additives Division of Great Lakes Chemical Corp. have also recently introduced a similar simple and accurate immunoassay test for the detection of Belclene 200 antiscalent.
