Urethane business

Fire codes or standards have governed urethane business for some time and have played a prominent role in the creation of building codes. Unfortunately, fire statistics currently are based on a minimum number of collected fire cases which become the base for regulatory activity that impacts industry and consumers. 

Glass-reinforced SMA polymers are used as electrical connectors, consoles, top pads, and as supports for urethane-padded instrument panels. There are seveial additional automotive uses. SMA aie also found in coffee makers, steam curlers, power tools, audio cassette components, business machines, vacuum cleaners, solar heat collectors, electrical housing, and fan blades, among others. 

Traditionally carbonylation reactions are underestimated in fine chemical business. Due to an abundance of starting materials and relatively inexpensive carbon monoxide or syn gas carbonylations will be enq>loyed more often to synthesize interesting building blocks amino acids via amidocarbonylation, profenes by asymmetric hydroformylations or hydrocarboxylations, reductive and oxidative carbonylations towards urethanes and ureas, etc.

Mold release agents are actually a different business than lubricants although there are some related chemistries at the lower end. These products are typically higher-priced formulations and are used primarily in thermoset urethanes, polyesters, and epoxies. The active ingredients are sold by silicone and fluorochemical producers such as Dow Corning, GE Silicones, Wacker, DuPont, and ICI. 

In the structuring of this program, no attempt has been made to be encyclopedic rather the aim has been to display a sampling of the work by some of the star performers, selected to illustrate how some of the difficulties have been surmounted and to recount some of the rewarding achievements in this quarter century of exploration. In the first section the concepts and evolution of an intriguing, fundamental chemistry of the sucrose molecule are explored. Three sections are devoted to illustrating some of the industrial applications of sucrochemistry in surfactants, surface coatings, urethane plastics, and fermentation processes. The symposium closes with discussions of the business and economic forecasts for sucrochemistry. 

Expressions such as cost/or cost/m /y, which is better, percent of maintenance costs, percent of capital costs, and so forth, are often used to describe the cost of coating systems in economical terms. However, all these expressions provide an incomplete comparison on which to base a business decision. The cost of coatings materials for a maintenance overhaul only range between 5 to 21 percent of the total costs, while surface preparation is constant at about 45 percent of the total. Additionally, the performance of protective coatings has to be included in the overall decision matrix. High-performance epoxy polyamide, urethane, or zinc-rich systems, for example, may represent savings of nearly 40 percent over "less expensive" systems when a service life greater than 10 years is considered. 

In late 2012, BASF announced a significant reorganization that split its plastics business in two, with engineering plastics and some specialty polyurethanes being combined with catalysts and coatings. Commodity plastics and the production of urethane monomers were moved to the chemicals unit. These changes were said to have been made to improve the company s ability to focus within its specialty and commodity businesses.
