Drive-by shootings, stakeouts, and Mafia-style executions are now so commonplace in many inner city neighborhoods that mistakes are frequent. 

The problem of health constantly appears as an unavoidable consequence of globalization, when the developing processes of urbanization, local violence, and regional conflicts (Anderson et al., 2006) enhance the risks of morbidity and... 

Since Russia s urbanization drive in the late nineteenth century, cities have been simultaneously heralded as both the means and the pinnacle of the country s move toward modernization and civilization. City planners carefully designed parks, public squares, apartment blocks, and other city spaces to represent the greatness of the country. Urban spaces themselves were to monumentalize Russia s heritage and future. Yet at the same time, cities have also been places of great danger and violence, both real and imagined. I try to be exceptionally cautious in using such loaded terms as "fascism, but I think this one is justified here. Men are more aggressive and more likely to be violent than women, related to both biological and cultural factors. In the United States, men are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than women. Women make more attempts, but most are gestures. Violence against women by their spouses or live-in partners is widespread in both rural and urban areas. Nearly 25,000 women at 15 sites in 10 countries are victims of partner violence ranging from a low of 15% in Yokahama, Japan, to a high of 71% in Ethiopia. Only a tiny fraction of spouse abuse is reported to authorities (Rosenthal, 2006). 

The fourth new reality is peace enforcement and low-intensity warfare. It is entirely possible that the Gulf War will be the last high-intensity air/land battle for decades. Whether or not high-intensity warfare returns, it seems very likely that long-duration, low-intensity conflicts like Kosovo, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, and Iraq will continue and will be the major focus of engaged U.S. forces. These conflicts have a low but ever-present violence level, are conducted in urban and interurban terrain, have complex rules of engagement, resemble police operations as much as mihtary operations, and are conducted by international coalitions. 

South High School is in an urban environment. Gang activity appears to be on the rise, based on the presence of graffiti and increased acts of violence on school property. The school was built in 1950, and few repairs have been made since original construction. Principal Hayes is under pressure by the board of education to improve what is occurring at the school.

Most Colombian IDPs are Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities, particularty in areas such as the Pacific Coast and borders with Ecuador and Venezuela.
