One notable characteristic of religious practice in the United States is the almost completely separate worship practices of African Americans and whites (Schaefer, 2000). According to Lincoln and Mamiya (1990), a black sacred cosmos emerged historically that cut across denominational lines. They posit that regardless of denomination a qualitatively different cultural form of Christian expressions is found in most black churches. The body s cells are normally subject to strict social control. They only divide until they come into contact with neighboring cells cell division then ceases due to contact inhibition. Exceptions to this rule include embryonic cells, cells of the intestinal epithelium (where the cells are constantly being replaced), cells in the bone marrow (where formation of blood cells takes place), and tumor cells. Uncontrolled cell proliferation is an important indicator of the presence of a tumor. While normal cells in cell culture only divide 20-60 times, tumor cells are potentially immortal and are not subject to contact inhibition. 

Medical and sociological gun control advocates have also pointed out that such countries as Britain and Japan, with strict firearm controls, have far lower homicide rates than the United States. Gun rights activists question whether such cross-cultural comparisons are valid, noting that European and Japanese societies are more conformist and that it is social control, not gun control, that is responsible for their low rate of violence.

Kramer previewed a world in which what is constant in the self and what is mutable, what is necessary and what is contingent, would need. .. to be revised. All this was summed up in what Kramer famously termed cosmetic psychopharmacology. He imagined a future of psychotropic medications so refined that we could choose whichever personality traits we wanted. Of course, it would be hard to distinguish honest free choice from the pressures to become the types of people favored by particular cultures. The book, in short, raises questions about self and social control ... 

In addition to the built-in protection and control mechanisms, the cell is also subject to a number of external controls, which ensure that cell division occurs in balance with the overall development of the organism and with external growth conditions. This is a kind of social control of cell division that regulates the progress of the cell cycle, with the help of circulating signal molecules or via cell-cell interactions. 

However, harm reduction was not the official role of the clinics so whether or not they were achieving some success at it, they were in any case being judged by other criteria. From outside they were assessed from the perspective of social control, while from the inside a treatment model was stressed. Eventually they were viewed as failing on both counts.
