On 13 and 14 May 1998, Indonesia experienced one of the crises of its modern history as urban mobs turned on their countrymen of Chinese descent, killing hundreds (though most deaths were non-Chinese looters trapped in burning buildings), pack-raping at least 180 women and destroying millions of dollars worth of property.
