When a mixture of p-anisaldehyde and dimethyl sulfone was treated with excess potassium t-butoxide in DMF at 60-65 °C, bis-unsaturated sulfone 277 was obtained. In the reaction at 50 °C using a small amount of base, the main product was a heterocyclic compound, i.e., 2,4-di-p-methoxyphenyl-l,4-oxathiane 4,4-dioxide 278358. [Pg.638]

A highly efficient construction of the steroidal skeleton 166 is reported by Kametani and coworkers111 in the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of the a, jS-unsaturated sulfone moiety of 165 (equation 117). Thus, when the sulfone 165 is heated in 1,2-dichlorobenzene for 6h, the steroidal compound 166 can be obtained in 62% yield. The compound 166 produces estrone (167) by elimination of benzenesulfinic acid and subsequent hydrogenation of the formed double bond. The selenosulfonates (26) comprise another class of selenenyl pseudohalides. They are stable, crystalline compounds available from the reaction of selenenyl halides with sulftnate salts (Scheme 10) or more conveniently from the oxidation of either sulfonohydrazides (ArS02NHNH2) or sulftnic acids (ArS02H) with benzeneseleninic acid (27) (equations 21 and 22). Selenosulfonates add to alkenes via an electrophilic mechanism catalyzed by boron trifluoride etherate, or via a radical mechanism initiated thermally or photolytically. The two reaction modes produce complementary regioselectivity, but only the electrophilic processes are stereospecific (anti). Similar radical additions to acetylenes and allenes have been reported, with the regio- and stereochemistry as shown in Scheme 11. The olefination based upon the reaction of benzothiazolyl- and phenyltetra-zolyl sulfones with carbonyl compounds is widely used in the target-oriented synthesis. In order to illustrate the reaction scope, yields and stereoselectivities, in this section we present selected examples of these reactions.
