Benzeneseleninic acid

A 30% solution of hydrogen peroxide in water was purchased from Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. The reaction requires 2 molar equivalents of hydrogen peroxide, the first to oxidize the selenide to the selenoxide and the second to oxidize the elimination product, benzeneselenenic acid, to benzeneseleninic acid. The submitters recommend that the hydrogen peroxide solution be taken from a recently opened bottle, or titrated to verify its concentration. [Pg.167]

The oxidation is autocatalytic, being catalyzed by the product, benzeneseleninic acid. If the temperature drops significantly below 30°, the addition of hydrogen peroxide should be stopped, and the ice-salt bath should be removed to maintain the rate of oxidation and avoid an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the flask. [Pg.167]

The yellow dichloromethane solution turns colorless, and a precipitate of benzeneseleninic acid appears. [Pg.167]

The benzeneseleninic acid weighs 14.4-16 g. (73-82%) and melts at 123-124°. It may be reconverted to diphenyl diselenide by reduction with sodium thiosulfate or sodium bisulfite. ... [Pg.167]

Bloodworth, A. J., et al., J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans. 1, 1983, 471-473 Attempted thermal dehydration of benzeneseleninic acid, formed by oxidation of diphenyl diselenide with hydrogen peroxide, gave a solid which exploded at 53-55°C. The solid may have been the complex of the acid with hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.1633]

Other Peroxyacids. Benzeneperoxyseleninic acid has been prepared in situ from benzeneseleninic acid and hydrogen peroxide and is used to epoxidize terpenic olefins and Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones. [Pg.1236]

A mixture of 20 grams of benzeneseleninic acid and 80 c.c. of aniline is heated at 110° to 115° C. for six hours. Excess aniline is then removed by steam distillation and the dark-coloured residue extracted with hot dilute hydrochloric acid. The addition of sodium carbonate to the extract precipitates the selenide as a pink microcrystalline powder (yield, 12 to 15 grams). It dissolves in hot dilute hydrochloric acid, and on cooling the hydrochloride separates as small, feathery needles, M.pt. 159° C. The free base forms almost colourless prismatic needles, M.pt. 93° to 94° C. [Pg.24]
