Unsaturated alkyl chains

Amides in general are stable to elevated processing temperatures, ak oxidation, and dilute acids and bases. StabiUty is reduced in amides containing unsaturated alkyl chains unsaturation offers reactive sites for many reactions. 

A number of very interesting predictions that compare favourably to that of MD simulations as well as experimental observations, were drawn. Within each class the phospholipids can have alkyl chains of different length (Table 13.1) and different numbers of double bonds. Alkyl chains which only consist of single bonds are called saturated . Alkyl chains which contain at least one double bond are called unsaturated . Unsaturated alkyl chains are more flexible and have lower melting temperatures. 

Another source of oil, but of very different composition than the previously described oils, is cardanol oil, the major component of cashew nut shell liquid. This is a low-value side product of the mechanical processing of the cashew nut and is therefore a widely available source of cardanol oil. Cardanol oil is a mixture of 3-pentadecylphenol with either a saturated alkyl chain or a one-, two-, or threefold unsaturated alkyl chain (Fig. 10). 

The total unsaturation from Equation (7) can be apportioned into contributions from alicyclic structural moieties such as furanose and pyra-nose rings, aromatic structural moieties such as benzene rings, and carbonyl-containing moieties such as carboxylic acids, esters, amides, aldehydes, and ketones. The approximate upper active level (wt%) limit for the AA(H) system is 11. With the use of AA(S) and calcium chloride, the critical concentration of AA(H) dispersions (the concentration above which the viscosity increases to unacceptable values, that is, >700 cP at room temperature) is shifted from 11 to —25% (Figure 9.5) [18,75]. AA(S) is an analogue of AA(H), with soft tallow moieties. In soft tallow groups, there is —45% of unsaturated alkyl chains [mainly the oleyl moiety CH3(CH2)7CH=CH(CH2)7C0R] and 55% of saturated alkyl chains (Cj4-Cig). Conversely, in hydrogenated tallow (also sometimes referred to as hard tallow or H-tallow), all of the unsaturated chains are converted to saturated chains. Addition of the permanganate ion to alkenes and alkynes produces a cyclic manganate ester which cleaves to give carboxylic acids. This method used for the determination of the position of an olefin in an unsaturated alkyl chain requires vigorous conditions when alkynes are to be cleaved. 

Japanese Lacquer Films Lacquers are used ubiquitously as surface-coating materials for wood, porcelain, and metal. The main component of Japanese lacquer ( ura-shi in Japanese) is urashiol, a brown liquid (boiling point, 200-210 °C) consisting of a mixture of several catechols, each substituted with a satmated or unsaturated alkyl chain of 15 or 17 carbon atoms [55]. The liquid that causes an allergic skin reaction in most people, is obtained from the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree (Rhus vemicifera) and can be polymerized to form lacquer films. Photochemical studies of iron-group metallocene substrates have received much attention, e.g. quenching of excited uranyl ion luminescence, formation of charge-transfer complexes with TCNE, redox reactions of octamethyl-ferrocene and of carboxylate anions of the types FcCOj and Fc(X)COr (X = saturated or unsaturated alkyl chain). Enzyme-catalysed one-electron oxidation of ferrocene derivatives has also been studied. Ferrocene-ferricenium cation redox systems have been incorporated into electrochemical and photo-electrochemical cells, and have found use for catalysis of photo-addition of MeOH to Bu NCO. Inter-valence electron-transfer properties of partially oxidized Fc(C C)nFc ( = 0—2), meso-tetraferrocenylporphyrin, and poly(vinylferrocene) have been assessed. 

The properties are determined by the chainlength. They are foam-intensive and wash-effective, and they have a high interfacial activity. Water solubility decreases with increasing chainlength, while sensitivity to water hardness increases. Unsaturated alkyl chains impart better solubility.
