In 1962, Pierre Eymard, a graduate smdent at the University of Lyon, synthesized a series of khellin derivatives. Khellin is a biologically active substance that occurs in the fruit of the wild Arabian Khell plant and which has been used for centuries by herbalists for the treatment of kidney stones. Eymard arranged to have his new compounds biologically evaluated at the Ecole de Medecine et de Pharmacie in nearby Grenoble. When attempts to produce a solution of these khellin compounds failed, advice was sought from H. Meunier of the nearby Laboratoire Berthier. In view of Berthier s recent peripheral interest in valproic acid as a solvent for bismuth compounds, Meunier recommended valproic acid as a nontoxic inert solvent. [Pg.112]

Alain Berthod received his PhD in 1979 from the University of Lyon. He took an assistant professor s position at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) working in electrochemistry. In 1983 he was promoted as associate professor and in 1993 as research director. He focused on the developing and the use of micellar solutions and microemulsions in chromatography. His interests lie in the separation of chiral molecules and enantiorecognition mechanisms. He has contributed to the development of the countercurrent chromatography technique that uses a sup-port-free liquid stationary phase. He was member of the editorial board of major analytical chemistry and chromatography journals. He is editor-in-chief of Separation Purification Reviews (Taylor Francis, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). [Pg.402]

Once the toxicity parameters were computed to a spreadsheet yielding a table of 30 rows (effluents) and 9 columns (bioassays), we ran a principal component analysis (PCA) to check the diversity patterns of effluents and the correlation between tests. The PCA calculations were carried out using the ADE 3.6 statistical package on a Macintosh computer. Professor Jaroslaw Lewkowski was born in 1966 in Lodz (Poland). In 1990, he obtained his M.Sc. degree from the University of Lodz, Poland, studying the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydro-xymethylfurfural derivatives at the nickel oxide/hydroxide electrode. He then joined Professor Skowronski s group from the University of Lodz, Poland, cooperating simultaneously with Professor Descotes team from the University of Lyon 1, France. In 1996, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Lodz, investigating the selective conversions of furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and their derivatives. [Pg.428]

Wieslawa Kudelska was born in Poland (1951) she studied pharmacy at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland (1969-74), where she also carried out her Ph.D. work (1974—82). She joined Professor G. Descotes group at the Claude-Bernard University of Lyon, France (1985). In 1988, she spent one year in USA working as a postdoctoral research fellow with Professor J. Loz at Laboratory for Carbohydrate Chemistry, Harvard University. From 1974 to 2004, she was employed at the Medical University of L6dz, Faculty of Pharmacy. Since 2004, she is a professor at the Jan Dlugosz University of Czestochowa, Poland. Her scientific interests are centered on carbohydrate chemistry. [Pg.852]
