Tripoli. TripoH [1317-95-9] is a fine grained, porous, decomposed siHceous rock produced mainly in Arkansas, Illinois, and Oklahoma. It is widely used for polishing and buffing metals, lacquer finishing, and plated products. Since tripoH particles are rounded, not sharp, it has a mild abrasive action particularly suited for polishing. TripoH is also used in toothpastes, in jewelry polishing, and as filler in paints, plastics, and mbber. Rottenstone and amorphous siHca are similar to tripoH and find the same uses. In 1987 the abrasive use of tripoH in the United States totaled 26.6 million tons and was valued at about 3.1 million however, the portion used as a filler totaled 71.1 million tons and had a value of almost 10 million (4).

In 1993, a total of over 6 x 10 t of polyurethanes were consumed worldwide (Table 8). The flexible foam market in the United States totaled 932,000 tons in 1994. Flexible slab foam is used predominantly in furniture, carpet underlay, and bedding molded foam is used extensively in transportation. Carpet underlay is manufactured from either virgin or scrap polyurethane foam, which is combined with a binder adhesive. The consumption of flexible polyurethane foam in the various U.S. markets in 1994 is shown in Table 9. 

Economic Aspects and Uses. Most of the iodine used in the United States comes from Japan and Chile. The United States produces 10% of the world supply but consumes 30%. Production in Chile appears to be relatively low cost, and the product there presently controls prices. Iodine is produced in Woodward and Vici, Oklahoma. These two locations produce about 30% of the 4000 tons used yearly in the United States. Total world consumption is 10,000 to 12,000 tons per year. Prices range from 20.00/kg in 1988 to 12.5/kg in 1991. 

The proven reserves of natural gas in the United States total about 4.58 Tm (1.62 X 10 fF). Production in 1993 was about 0.51 Tm (1.8 X 10 fF). Revisions and adjustments to the existing resource base, together with modest new additions to proven reserves, have held the recent decline in reserves to about 1.6 percent per year. 

From this analysis it is clear that in addition to their benefits, the use of pesticides in food production not only causes serious public health problems but also considerable damage to vital agricultural and natural ecosystems in the United States and world. A conservative estimate suggests that the environmental and social costs of pesticide use in the United States total about 4 billion each year. Worldwide the yearly environmental and public health costs are probably at least 100 billion. This is several times the 18 bllllon/yr spent on pesticides in the world.

Proven reserves of conventionally reservoired natural gas in the United States total about 5.35 Tm (189 Tft ). An additional 0.53 Tm (18.7 Tft ) of proven reserves are in coal bed methane deposits. Production in 2003 was about 0.54 Tm (19.1 Tft ), over 75 percent... 

Although pyridine releases to land from industrial sources in the United States totalled an estimated 510 kg in 1988 as reported in the Toxics Release Inventory (Environmental Protection Agency, 1996c), release of only 2 kg to land was reported in 1997 (Environmental Protection Agency, 1999).

In 1973, just prior to the Mideast conflict, the cost of a barrel of crude oil was 4.08 and petroleum was 26% of the United States total imports. By 1975 the price had risen to 13.93 per barrel and petroleum was 33% of the total import. In 1997 the price of crude oil was in the range of 19-20 per barrel and imported petroleum is about 55% of the total U.S. imports.
