Additionally, two other reactors, the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) for which the location is under negotiation, and the Tokamak Physics Experiment at PPPL, Princeton, New Jersey, are proposed. In the United States, the first ironworks was built at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. The Hammersmith furnace in Saugus, Massachusetts, built in 1645, operated until 1675. This early American ironworks has been restored and is called the Saugus Iron Works. Iron blast furnaces appeared in many locahties where there were deposits of iron ore. Small bodies of iron ore in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New York formed the basis of many small colonial furnaces. 

The State of New Jersey s Mandatory Recycling Act requked counties and municipalities to recycle 60% of the municipal soUd waste stream by 1995 (1). Although the law does not requke curbside collection systems, this is by far the most popular recycling collection method in New Jersey. By 1993, New Jersey reached a 46% recycling rate and led the United States in recycling. 

The supply and demand for mbidium compounds has grown steadily since the 1970s. In 1979 the U.S. demand was ca 1040 kg of contained mbidium (16), and total world demand was estimated at approximately twice that of the United States. Reserves of mbidium in North America are estimated at 2 X 10 kg the United States is - 100% import-reliant for mbidium, and Canada is the principal source of the raw material (16). The demand for mbidium metal is small compared to the demand for mbidium compounds. Table 2 fists approximate prices of mbidium metal and mbidium compounds. Primary producers of mbidium are Cabot Performance Chemicals (Boyerstown, Pennsylvania), MSA Research Corporation (Callery, Pennsylvania), and CM Chemical Products, Inc. (Berkeley Heights, New Jersey). Research quantities of mbidium in standard and specialized ampuls are available from Strem Chemicals, Inc. (Newburyport, Massachusetts).

Poly(vinyl chloride) is Hsted on the TSCA inventory and the Canadian Domestic Substances List (DSL) as ethene, chloro-, homopolymer [9002-86-2]. Because polymers do not appear on the European Community Commercial Chemical Substances listing or EINECS, poly(vinyl chloride) is listed through its monomer, vinyl chloride [75-01-4]. In the United States, poly(vinyl chloride) is an EPA hazardous air pollutant under the Clean Air Act Section 112 (40 CER 61) and is covered under the New Jersey Community Right-to-Know Survey N.J. Environmental Hazardous Substances (EHS) List as "chloroethylene, polymer" with a reporting threshold of 225 kg (500 lb). 

Paradoxically, even rapid lowering of demand may cause rapid cost escalation this was the case in New Jersey during a 1981 drought when conservation caused substantial shrinking of demand and private water companies had to double their water prices. The continued increase of demand and reduction of supply portend real and relendess water-cost increases in every part of the United States in the future. One possible way to assure at least adequate suppHes, and possibly to moderate these cost increases, is through water reuse. 

Besides the above federal laws, all 50 U.S. states have also passed environmental laws. As previously mentioned, both the United States and the state of New Jersey have passed Pollution Prevention Acts (295).

After initial attempts at commercialization under the sponsorship of Sacony-Vacuum Company (currently Mobil) in Paulsboro, New Jersey, failed, I loudly and his development company, Houdiy Process Corporation, moved to Sun.

In the United States in recent years several diseases with animal hosts are now infecting humans. The Arena virus has as its host certain desert rodents. Rodent droppings when dry and airborne as dust particles infect humans, often with lethal consequences. The West Nile virus appeared in the United States in 1999. Birds carry this virus, and mosquitoes are the vector to humans. In 1999 the virus was localized in the New York City area. By 2000 it has spread across New York State and into New Jersey and Massachusetts. The West Nile virus is especially lethal when it infects children, the elderly, or those with a compromised immune system. 

Ever since the major power failure in 1965 that blacked out the northeastern United States, an important site consideration has been the reliability of electrical power systems. For instance, a 5-hour power failure cost a New Jersey firm two days downtime. In another case the Sun Oil Company s 170,000-barrel-per-day refinery at Marcus Hook, Pa., suffered a 250,000 loss due to a 3 1/2-hour power failure. It was four days before full production could be restored. The problem is that there is no section of the country that has not had a major power failure.
