United States carcinogenicity studies

Abbott Laboratories, which has conducted additional toxicity and carcinogenicity studies with cyclamate, a 10 1 mixture of cyclamate—saccharin, and cyclohexylamine, claimed to be unable to confirm the 1969 findings. Abbott then filed a food additive petition for cyclamate in 1973, which was denied by the FDA in 1980. In 1982, the Calorie Control Council and Abbott Laboratories filed a second food additive petition containing the results of additional safety studies (73). That petition was stiU pending as of 1996. Cyclamate is, however, allowed for use in any or all three categories, ie, food, beverage, and tabletop, in about 50 countries. Sweet n Low, known in the United States as a saccharin-based table-top sweetener, contains exclusively cyclamate in Canada. [Pg.277]

TCE is the other major contaminant at the site and is a common groundwater contaminant in aquifers throughout the United States [425]. Since TCE is a suspected carcinogen, the fate and transport of TCE in the environment and its microbial degradation have been extensively studied [25,63, 95,268,426,427]. Reductive dechlorination under anaerobic conditions and aerobic co-metabolic processes are the predominant pathways for TCE transformation. In aerobic co-metabolic processes, oxidation of TCE is catalyzed by the enzymes induced and expressed for the initial oxidation of the growth substrates [25, 63, 268, 426]. Several growth substrates such as methane, propane, butane, phenol, and toluene have been shown to induce oxygenase enzymes which co-metabolize TCE [428]. [Pg.392]

This study will provide fundamental information on the effect of stereoisomerism on the environmental fate of a widely used chloroacetanilide herbicide, metolachlor. Metolachlor is classified as a potential carcinogen and is the second most extensively used herbicide in the United States (7). Biological dechlorination of metolachlor leads to the formation of more polar metabolites (8), metolachlor oxanilic acid (OXA), and metolachlor ethanesulfonic acid (ESA) (Figure 3). Metolachlor OXA and metolachlor ESA are found at higher concentrations and are more frequently detected in surface and ground water than their parent compound (9). [Pg.389]

Occupational and toxicological studies have demonstrated adverse health effects from exposure to toxic contaminants. Emissions data from stationary and mobile sources are used in an atmospheric dispersion model to estimate outdoor concentrations of 148 toxic contaminants for each of the 60,803 census tracts in the contiguous United States for 1990. Approximately 10% of all census tracts had estimated concentrations of one or more carcinogenic HAPs at a greater than l-in-10,000 risk level. Twenty-two pollutants with chronic toxicity benchmark concentrations had modeled concentrations in excess of these benchmarks, and approximately 200 census tracts had a modeled concentration 100 times the benchmark for at least one of these pollutants. This comprehensive assessment of air toxics concentrations across the United States indicates hazardous air pollutants may pose a potential public health problem (Woodruff et al., 1998). [Pg.257]
