The WHO was established in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). Its purpose is to serve as the directing and coordinating authority for international health matters and public health. One of the main functions of the WHO is to provide objective and reliable information and advice in the field of human health, a task that it partly fulfills through WHO publications [35]. The first WHO draft text on GMP was prepared in 1967 and a revised version was published in 1968 as an annex of the twenty-second report of the WHO expert committee on specifications for pharmaceutical preparations. Over the years the WHO has issued several versions of its GMP guidelines as well as other guidelines related to the GMP and quality issues of the production of therapeutic products. The latest version of the WHO GMP guideline was published in 2003 as an annex of the WHO Technical Report 908 [36]. 

The committee is cognizant of the need for international harmonization of specifications in today s world. Efforts were made, where feasible, to harmonize the specifications in this edition with those of other standards-setting organizations, in particular with those in the Compendium of Food Additive Specifications, prepared by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO)AVorld Health Organization (WHO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and published by the FAO. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reference preparations for the measurement of complement, immunoglobulins, and a few other proteins, but values are assigned in international units (lU). Two preparations, WHO 6HSP and the United States National Reference Preparation for Specific Human Proteins (USNRP), have values assigned in lU and in some cases mass units for 6 and 13 proteins, respectively. However, conversion factors between mass units and lU differ by as much as 16% between the two preparations. 

The DBA has several missions. First, the DBA enforces U.S. controlled substances laws as they pertain to the manufacture, distribution, and dispensing of controlled substances. Second, the DBA investigates and prepares for prosecution organizations and principal members of organizations involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances for illicit traffic. Third, the DBA liaises with the United Nations, Interpol, and other organizations to reduce the availability of illicit controlled substances, both domestically and internationally.

In 2002, an expert consultation of international amino acid/protein scientists was convened by the United Nations World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and University (WHO/FAO/UNU) to evaluate studies to-date and make recommendations for human protein intake (WHO/FAO/UNU Expert Consultation, 2007). That body had previously asked Rand et al. (2003) to prepare a meta-analysis of nitrogen balance studies. The meta-analysis, consisting of 235 individual subjects across 19 studies was used in the 2007 report, along with other research to make these current WHO/FAO/UNU Expert Consultation (2007) recommendations. The amino acid requirements for adults in the previous EAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation Report in 1985 (EAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation, 1985) had been taken directly from the 1973 EAO/ WHO report (EAO/WHO, 1973). However, since 1985 concern had arisen regarding the previously derived values and that the values for adults were too low (WHO/EAO/UNU Expert Consultation, 2007). 

The format of Chemiekaarten has been widely acclaimed by professionals from the major industrial countries and has been selected by experts from the World Health Organization, the International Labour Office, the United Nations Environment Program and the European Community to serve as an example for the preparation of the International Chemical Safety Cards.

Synchronous optical network (SONET) refers to an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard for fiber optic telecommunications interfaces. It was developed in the late 1980s and telecommunications equipment providing the interface continues to be deployed throughout the North American network. Closely related to SONET is the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) interface, which is an international fiber optic telecommunications interface standard prepared by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an agency of the United Nations. Although SONET and SDH are documented in different standards, the two interfaces are compatible. SONET can be considered a subset of SDH, in the sense that it selects among various options allowed in SDH.
