In 2005, a comprehensive comparison of LCIA toxicity characterization models was initiated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in their life cycle initiative. The main objectives of this effort were to [9] (1) identify specific sources of differences between the models results and structure (2) detect the indispensable model components and (3) build a scientific consensus model from them, representing recommended practice.

Indeed, some developing countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Ecuador, Indonesia, and India, have quietly used DDT for the past three decades, without exciting much comment In 199 7, however, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) decided to promote a treaty—a framework convention—that would ban twelve persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including DDT, in all countries. 

To overcome some of these difficulties we started a program to monitor the inorganic and organic constituents in major world rivers. The study "Carbon Transport in Major World Rivers" is sponsored by the Scientific Committee for Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Within its framework over 50 % of the total water discharged to the sea is being monitored at least once a month. 

This effort by the OECD is actively supported by other international organizations concerned with chemical safety, as well as by the chemical industry. The Commission of the European Community (CEC), the United Nations International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS), and the International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals (IRPTQ of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) all send observers to chemical review meetings. The UN wganizations intend to disseminate the final conclusions and recommendations for specific chemicals internationally, beyond OECD member countries.

A report released by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in 1992 stated that 4.84 billion acres of soil—an area the size of China and India combined—had been degraded to the point at which it will be difficult or impossible to reclaim them. By 2002 UNEP was describing soil as a threatened natural resource and reporting that 17% of the land surface worldwide is strongly degraded.
