It is worth mentioning that two of the largest, most influential and independently funded early trials found little difference between the antidepressants tested and placebo. In the Medical Research Council trial comparing imipramine, phenelzine, ECT and placebo conducted in the United Kingdom (Medical Research Council 1965), it is well known that phenelzine performed poorly. However differences between... [Pg.140]

The work reported in this paper was supported by the Commission of the European Community (Contract ENV 780 UK(H)) and the United Kingdom Medical Research Council (SPG 831763). We are grateful to the Inner London Education Authority and the many teachers, parents and children who participated in the studies. We are grateful to the Department of the Environment, and especially to Mr M. Quinn and Mr P. Cooney for allowing us access to part of the sample involved in the UK Department of the Environment monitoring exercise. [Pg.277]

Soon after the Bhopal accident, the government of India promised to conduct a comprehensive study on the acute and long-term effects of exposme to MIC. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) released approximately 2 million for research a cohort of 80,021 gas-exposed people and 15,931 controls were registered, but only 16,8 exposed subjects and 5,741 controls could be contacted in 2010 (Sharma, 2013). Researchers were not recruited to study all aspects of toxicity. No definite criteria were set to make a quantitative assessment of the exposure to MIC the best estimate has remained the distance from the Union Carbide factory (Dhara et al., 2002). A number of laboratories in the United States and United Kingdom initiated research on MIC (Environmental Health Perspective, 1987), but their interest faded quickly. The twentieth anniversary of the disaster drew the attention of the media, but not of researchers. [Pg.287]

He pointed out that it had never been systematically evaluated, and that there were no studies that had attempted to control for these dramatic effects. A Medical Research Council funded randomised trial conducted in the United Kingdom in the 1950s appeared to support his conclusion when it found insulin coma produced no better outcome than a barbiturate-induced sleep used as a control procedure (Ackner, Harris, Oldham 1957). [Pg.34]

The system for dealing with doctors suspected of research crime in the United Kingdom revolves around the GMC, which stated in 1992 that their disciplinary committee would take a very serious view of proven clinical research fraud. Since 1990, 26 doctors accused of research fraud have been reported to the GMC, all but 1 being found guilty. The penalties imposed ranged from erasure from the Medical Register, to admonishment and limitation of future research. The GMC can only investigate suspected fraud or misconduct after a formal... [Pg.639]

ATP shuttles to and fro throughout cells, and is "traded" during chemical reactions. These molecular transactions drive reactions forward to make a product. Several decades of work earned three scientists — Paul Boyer of the University of California, Los Angeles, John Walker of the Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom, and Jens Skou of the University of Aarhus in Denmark—the Nobel Prize for figuring out how the motor, a molecule... [Pg.3]
