These two volumes collect forty-four selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Third European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics, held in Granada (Spain), April 19-22, 1998. Ninety-nine scientists from Bulgaria, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Venezuela attended the workshop, discussing the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. [Pg.434]

Sucralose is not metabolised by mammalian species and is poorly absorbed by the body. JECFA has assigned an ADI of 15 mg/kg bw. Sucralose was approved in the United States in April 1998 for use in a variety of food applications, including soft drinks. In August 1999, this approval was extended to full-category GMP approval. In the United Kingdom, it was granted a temporary approval on 15 March 2002 (UK Statutory Instrument 379). In 2004, sucralose was added to the EU list of permitted sweeteners. [Pg.81]

Robert Johnson presented a technical paper in April 1992 entitled HAZOPS Today [19] in which he stated, The hazard and operability studies (HAZOPS) method has likely become, over a period of less than ten years, the most widely-used hazard evaluation procedure in the process industries. Johnson also explained that HAZOPS is a relative latecomer to the United States and it has attained a high degree of prominence in the U.S. process industries. The method began in the United Kingdom and has now spread throughout western Europe and North America. (See Figure 11—1.)... [Pg.284]

Chemical Defense Establishment of the British War Office, was part of a larger effort by scientists in the United Kingdom and United States to explore the pharmacological and clinical aspects of mustard gas injury (Beale 1993).9 The first successful results appeared in April 1941. A year later Auerbach and Robson delivered their initial report of these experiments to the British Ministry of Supply. The report was considered confidential, however, and British censors delayed full disclosure of their findings until the war s end.10 In the interim, but still a full three years after completion of their initial experiment, Auerbach and Robson managed to publish a half-page research note in Nature (Auerbach and Robson 1944). That brief communication is remarkable mainly as an artifact of the British wartime security apparatus and less as an announcement heralding an important scientific discovery. [Pg.28]

The first recorded reference to the use of expert systems in pharmaceutical product formulation was by Bradshaw on the April 27,1989, in the London Financial Times, closely followed by an article in the autumn of the same year by Walko. Both refer to the work then being undertaken by personnel at ICI/Zeneca Pharmaceuticals (now AstraZeneca), United Kingdom (UK) and Logica UK Ltd. to develop expert systems for formulating pharmaceuticals using Formulogic. Since that time, several companies and academic institutions have reported on their experiences in this area (Table 1). This article will review these applications. [Pg.1666]

Perinatal (and maternal) mortality rates are usually stated annually and for specified country or region. [Pg.306]

April 1945 was Porton s moment of truth. A German ammunition dump was captured and a mysterious shell shipped back to the United Kingdom. Gingerly dismantled with the help of a nearby American field laboratory, the scientists discovered Hitler s secret weapon. It was a terrible shock. Thirty-five years later it is still a source of embarrassment. The one time we were really caught with our trousers down, says one senior Porton man today. [Pg.194]
