Fabrics unidirectional

Unidirectional construction Refers to fibers that are oriented in the same direction, such as unidirectional fabric, tape, or laminate, often called UD. Such parallel alignment is included in pultrusion and filament winding applications. [Pg.507]

Continuous strand mats are approximately isotropic and have almost the same permeability in all directions (in the plane of the fabric). Many other fabrics, however, are strongly anisotropic and have different permeability in different directions. Gebart [18] proposed a model for this class of fabrics derived theoretically from a simplified fiber architecture. The model, which is valid for medium to high fiber volume fractions, was developed for unidirectional fabrics, but it can also be used for other strongly anisotropic fabrics. In this model the permeability in the high permeability direction (which is usually, but not always, in the direction of the majority of fibers) follows the Kozeny-Carman equation (Eq. 12.2). In the perpendicular direction, however, it is ... [Pg.366]

There is another method of producing 45° stitched fabrics by weaving a weft unidirectional fabric and then pulling the fiber on a special machine to introduce a 45° skew (Figure 21.35). The process does introduce a measure of crimp when the fiber is skewed, but heavy tows can be used, keeping costs down. A quadraxial lay-up could consist of ( 45°, 0°, 90°, —45°), where the 0° and 90° can be a conventional woven fabric used with the skewed 45° and —45° layers and after assembly, the three layers are then stitched together. The disadvantage is that the woven layer will introduce a measure of crimp. [Pg.885]

Unidirectional fabrics are also used for the thermostampingprocess. Iliese fabrics do not exhibit the undulations (crimp) that are present in woven fabrics, and thus, composites made from the non-crimp unidirectional fabrics will have essentially straight-line yarn paths. These unidirectional fabrics may be either stitched or unstitched. The primary role of these stitches is to... [Pg.145]

Unidirectional fabrics (UDFs) are manufactured by stitching parallel yams. They have much higher strength and stiffness in filament direction than all other fabric types. However, these mechanical properties are much lower in the transverse direction. UDFs are vulnerable to fiber wash under high resin pressure. [Pg.257]

The films and fibers are then both processed into the previously discussed semifinished products by means of conventional textile processing methods. Filament yams, woven fabrics and unidirectional fabrics, but also endless fiber fleeces and staple fiber fleeces, can be made from the fibers [40]. The films can be employed as semifinished products directly after being mono-, bi- or (rarely) multiaxially stretched. For the most part, the fibers are tailored into tapes, monoaxially stretched and woven into oriented textile products in order to produce the essentially woven fabrics. [Pg.722]

The SENTEX 410 (Selcom, Italy) strip seismic retrofit is a sensorised technical textile for the reinforcement of masoruy buildings located in areas prone to earthquake events. As shown in Figure 13.8, SENTEX 410 is made by an E-glass unidirectional fabric that is applied on the masoruy substrate using an epoxy system constituted by an... [Pg.289]

The reinforcement is E-glass in the form of chopped strand mat, woven rovings, fine weave fabric and unidirectional fabric and the resins were epoxies, phenolics (BP Chemicals), polyesters or compounds (DMC/ polyester, SMC/polyester). [Pg.139]

From previous experience and experimental investigations with composite materials, it is known that measurements of elasticity characteristics are less scattered than those of strength characteristics. Scatter also increases in the order unidirectional < fabric- < mat-reinforced composite materials. [Pg.111]
