UHMWPE Ultra-High Molecular Weight poly(ethylene) PS poly(styrene)... [Pg.1124]

Ultra high molecular weight poly(ethylene)s (UHMWPE)s are a special form of poly(ethylene) (PE). Due to the exceptional properties in comparison to ordinary PE types, UHMWPEs deserve to be dealt with in a separate chapter. The polymerization of UHMWPE was commercialized in the 1955 by Ruhrchemie AG (1). [Pg.75]

The effect of ultra-high molecular weight poly-(ethylene) (UHMWPE) the on mechanical and solid particle erosive wear behavior of aramid fabric reinforced-epoxy composites has been investigated [64]. A siUca sand of a size of 150-280 fim was used as an erodent. The erosive wear rate of UHMWPE in aramid-epoxy composite exhibits a lower value in comparison to neat composites. A maximum erosion rate was observed at an impingement angle 60 , and the material behaves in a semiductile manner. [Pg.308]

Figure 8.1. Overview of high performance fibers mechanical properties. PET = poly(ethylene terephthal-ate), UHMWPE = ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, PBO = poly(benzoxazole), M5 = PIPD or poly[di-imidazo-pyridinylene-(dihydroxy phenylene)]. The p-aramids included in the area are Kevlar, Twaron, Technora and SVM (Armos, Rusar) fibers. The latter fiber tjipe accounts for the high mod-ulus/high tenacity area of aramids (Adapted from ref. [6]). For chemical structures see Scheme 8.1... Figure 8.1. Overview of high performance fibers mechanical properties. Aerospace composite structures can also employ high-performance polymeric fibres such as the aramids Kevlar (DuPont) or Twaron (Teijin Twaron), poly(p-phenyl-ene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) (Toyobo) and high-modulus polyethylene (PE) (Dynema, Certran and Spectra). Generally ultra-high-molecular-weight PE (UHMWPE) can be considered to be inert to most environments except that the service temperature is limited to <130 °C. [Pg.358]

Poly Hi Solidur Plastics India Limited [4] developed products for use on the Indian Railways based on ultra-high molecular weight PE (UHMWPE Hoechst s Hostalen GUR). The base polymer is mixed with patented additives and uses a computer controlled sintering process and sophisticated fabrication methods to produce a material which is claimed to have much higher values for a number of technically important properties such as wear, chemical and water resistance, impact strength and dynamic coefficient of friction. The growth of the market for UHMWPE products is briefly discussed, and the applications targeted by Poly Hi Solidur Plastics are discussed. [Pg.14]
