Crystalline Silica. Quartz sand is of course the principal raw material for the production of glass (qv). Cristobalite and 3-quartz are used in glass ceramics (qv), ie, ceramics produced by the controlled crystallization of glass. Silica is a main constituent of ceramics (qv). For example, refractory silica brick containing small amounts of A O is used as roof brick for open-hearth furnaces at temperatures >1600° C (see Refractories). Silica sand or flour (ground quartz) is the raw material for soluble silicates, such as sodium silicate, which is consistently ranked as one of the top 50 U.S. industrial chemicals (98) (see Silicon compounds, synthetic inorganic silicates). [Pg.480]

Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate. Two ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers were evaluated (U.S. Industrial Chemicals NE 630X-1 and U.C.C. DQD 1868). Similar behavior was shown by both samples—i,e,y upon exposure to increasing dosages the tensile strength showed a maximum between 10 and 20 megarads with little effect upon elongation. Heat and chemical resistance appeared to be below that of irradiated polyethylene. [Pg.171]

Technical ethyl chloroformate (chlorocarbonate) is manufactured by the U. S. Industrial Chemical Company. [Pg.38]

This process allows the purification of glycols without the difficulties of salt separation because the manufacturing procedure is done in two discrete steps with ethylene oxide distillation prior to hydrolysis. The hydration step is either uncatalyzed at high temperatures and pressures or utilizes an acid catalyst. A U.S. Industrial Chemicals, Inc. process uses a sulfuric acid catalyst at moderate temperatures producing an aqueous solution of glycol-containing acid (9). This process requires an additional step in the purification to remove the catalyst. [Pg.358]

Figure 12.15. Two types of extrusion pelleting equipment, (a) Screw-type extruder for molten plastics The die is turned 90° in the illustration from its normal position for viewing purposes. The extruded material is cooled and chopped subsequently as needed (U.S. Industrial Chemical Co.), (b) Ring extruders material is charged with screw conveyors to the spaces between the inner rolls and the outer perforated ring, the ring rotates, material is forced through the dies and cut off with knives. Corresponding runs beginning with 128 g. (1 mole) of a-acetyl-7-butyrolactone gave 107-112 g. (89-93%) of crude 5-chloro-2-pentanone. The checkers consistently obtained yields of 79-81% using U. S. Industrial Chemicals, Inc., lactone. [Pg.76]

For washcoat preparation silicalite zeolite powder (S-115 from Union Carbide Corp.) was dried at 100°C in an oven overnight. Prehydrolyzed ethyl-orthosilicate containing 19.52 silica (Silbond H-5 from Stauffer Chemical Co.) was the source of the silica binder. Absolute ethanol (from U.S. Industrial Chemicals Co.) and absolute methanol (reagent grade from J. T. Baker Company) were used without further purification for the liquid portion of the washcoat slurry and for the methanol conversion reaction, respectively. Reagent grade ammonium nitrate (from J. T. Baker) was used for ion-exchange purposes. [Pg.494]

Solvent Manufacture and Preparation. 1,3-Dicyanobutane is a new material which can be produced at low cost by a process developed in the laboratories of U. S. Industrial Chemicals Co. (6, 7,14). The catalytic dimerization of acrylonitrile produces methyleneglutaronitrile which is readily hydrogenated to give methylglutaronitrile, also called 1,3-dicyanobutane. Thus,... [Pg.250]

The U.S. Industrial Chemicals Co. has suggested using a two-liter vessel, (diameter about 15 cm.) with a disk stirrer about 7.5 cm. in diameter, rotating at 4000-6000 r.p.m. (see Fig. 266). With an agitator diameter of 2.5 cm. and a speed of 8000-15,000 r.p.m., a half- to three-liter flask is recommended. [Pg.968]
