Type B cells

Perhaps the most interesting difference between the subunits is their carbohydrate-binding specificity.621,828 BS I(A4) agglutinated type A erythrocytes (specific titer, 170) but not type B cells, and precipitated A substance, indicating an affinity for a-D-linked 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-galactosyl residues. A person with type A blood makes antibodies that attack type B blood, forming clumps of type B cells. Similarly, a person with type B blood makes antibodies that attack type A blood, forming clumps of type A cells. However, a person with type A or type B blood does not make antibodies to type O blood. Thus, type O persons are called universal donors. They are not, however, universal acceptors because they produce antibodies to both type A and type B blood. [Pg.942]

The initial configuration is set up by building the field 0(r) for a unit cell first on a small cubic lattice, A = 3 or 5, analogously to a two-component, AB, molecular crystal. The value of the field 0(r) = at the point r = (f, 7, k)h on the lattice is set to 1 if, in the molecular crystal, an atom A is in this place if there is an atom B, 0, is set to —1 if there is an empty place, j is set to 0. Fig. 2 shows the initial configuration used to build the field 0(r) for the simple cubic-phase unit cell. Filled black circles represent atoms of type A and hollow circles represent atoms of type B. In this case all sites are occupied by atoms A or B. [Pg.694]

Recombinant humanized monoclonal antibodies have been used recently to target antigens that are preferentially located on cancer cells. Examples include trastuzumab and rituximab which are used to treat HER2 positive breast cancer and B-cell type lymphomas, respectively. Unwanted side effects include anaphylactic reactions. [Pg.156]

Large granular lymphocytes, not belonging to either the T- or B-cell lineage. Natural killer (NK) cells are considered part of the innate defense system since, in contrast to cytotoxic T-cells, they are able to kill certain tumor cells in vitro without prior sensitization. The basal activity of NIC cells increases dramatically following stimulation with type I IFNs. In addition, NK cells display Fc-receptors for IgG and are important mediators of Antibody-Dependent-Cell-mediated-Cytotoxicity (ADCC). [Pg.820]

The stems of the tree were foimd to contain polysaccharides consisting of arabinose, galactose and galacturonic acid and only minor amoimts of rham-nose. Structural studies indicate that the polymeric material consists of 1,4-linked galacturonic acid residues, terminal, 1,4-, 1,6- and 1,3,6 galactose units and terminal and 1,5-linked arabinofuranose residues. Further studies must be performed on this in order to determine what type of pectin it can be classified as. The Hnkage data indicate that both AG-I and AG-II are present. This polymer was shown to activate polyclonal B-cells [78]. [Pg.91]
