Three examples are presented that introduce the use of the equations developed in this chapter. These calculations should be used at the start of the performance analysis of all troubleshooting problems. This analysis will be expanded in subsequent chapters through Chapter 7 using additional tools and understandings to complete the troubleshooting process. 

Three case studies are presented next that demonstrate approaches to troubleshooting problems. The first two cases were developed with poor hypotheses, while the last case study had a problem that was solved quickly using strong hypotheses and a strong experimental plan for verification.

The development of gradient systems, available with both feed-forward and feedback control systems, is an important capability of the pumping system. In order to troubleshoot problems with the gradient system, it is valuable to have a feed-back control gradient system.

A patch may involve a recrystallization to eliminate or reduce the levels of impurities generated in the isolated material it may involve recrystallizing the intermediate producing this material. Often measures to develop patches are begun immediately after a problem has been identified, particularly when the problem arises in a manufacturing operation. 

Experience with the process and troubleshooting problems on scale are very valuable to decrease the amount of time needed for troubleshooting. Those who have developed the process are usually most familiar with the nuances and pitfalls of the process. These people often can very quickly troubleshoot a problem with their process by relying on their experience and intuition. Sometimes it is necessary to enlist the help of those who did not develop the troubled process. People with different and perhaps broader experiences may be able to see beyond the subtle processing effects that are too familiar for others to recognize. Having no vested interest in defending the development of this process, the outside expert may solve the problem dispassionately and quickly.
