Simaroubaceae are broadly used against dermatological conditions from bacterial origin (furuncles, superinfected wounds, erysipelas, acne, abscesses), parasitic origin (leishmaniasis), related to the presence of dermatophytes (ringworm), to those described as warts or cancerous tumors of the skin, tropical ulcers, and... [Pg.3792]

Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic rhizopod that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas. It can cause intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. It is transmitted orally by ingestion of cysts that develop into trophozoites in the large intestine. Amebic trophozoites release several cytolytic factors, e.g. amoe-bapore, which enable the parasite to invade tissue. In intestinal amoebiasis, E. histolyticatrophozoites invade the intestinal mucosa, causing a form of ulcerative colitis with bloody and mucous diarrhoea. Extraintestinal manifestation of amebiasis results in abscess formation, usually in the liver but sometimes in the brain. [Pg.477]

Secondary lactose intolerance may occur as a result of reduced enzyme activity following diffuse intestinal damage from infections (giardiasis, bacterial overgrowth, or viral gastroenteritis), ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, and tropical sprue. This deficiency is usually reversible following recovery from the disorder. [Pg.1863]

Lannea coromandelica L. (Anacardiaceae) is a deciduous tree widely distributed in Bangladesh, India and some other tropical countries. Plants belonging to this genus are used in folk medicine for treatment of elephantiasis, impotence, ulcers, vaginal troubles, halitosis, heart disease, dysentery, gout and rheumatism [108]. Stem bark extracts of L. coromandelica exhibited potent zoospore motility inhibitory activity followed by characteristic lysis. Identification of active principles and their mode of action toward zoospores are briefly discussed here. [Pg.1088]

The most common staphylococcal and/or streptococcal infections result from cuts, abrasions, burns and/or puncture wounds. P-Hemolytic Streptococcus of group A, Staphylococcus aureus or both are the usual bacteria cultured from lesions (Barnham and Neilson 1987). Some occupations are at particular risk butchers, meat packers, fish handlers, slaughtermen, etc. The most common clinical picture is impetigo characterised by erythematous patches covered by a yellowish crust. A variant is ecthyma, mainly observed in tropical countries it consists of a slow and gradually deepening ulceration surmounted by a thick crust. After healing, there is a permanent scar. [Pg.182]
