Annaka and Tanaka recently found the presence of several phases in polymer gels between the fully swollen and shrunken phases [46]. This interesting phenomenon was observed in a polyampholyte gel, consisting of acrylic acid (anionic constituent, AAc) and methacryl-amido-propyl-trimethyl-ammonium-chloride (cationic, M APT AC). The chemical structures of these constituents are shown in Fig. 32. A series of copolymer gels were prepared by radical copolymerization, where the total molar concentration of the constituents was kept constant at 700 mM and the molar ratio of AAc/MAPTAC was varied systematically. [Pg.55]

Baxendale, Evans and coworkers reported in 1946 that the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in aqueous solution was characterized by homogeneous solution kinetics, i.e. where mutual termination of free radicals occurred, in spite of the fact that the polymer precipitated as a separate phase. Increases in the rates of polymerization upon the addition of the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) were attributed to the retardation of the rate of coagulation of particles, which was manifested in a reduction in the effective rate constant for mutual termination,... [Pg.11]

Fig. 8 Pair distribution functions of complexes of a cylindrical symmetry (57% styryl-methyl(trimethyl)ammonium, 16% methacrylic acid, 27% methyl methacrylate) and b disklike symmetry (79% styrylmethyl(trimethyl)ammonium, 13% methacrylic acid, 8% methyl methacrylate). The curves which were calculated from the scattering data are represented by triangles and squares. Solid lines represent the distribution functions of a an idealized cylinder with a diameter of 3.0 nm and of b a disk with a height of 2.2 nm. The insets depict idealized symmetries of the particles. The latexes prepared in the group of Ford [68,69] consisted of hydrophobic monomers and a cross-linker, i.e., styrene, methacrylate monomers with various substitutes in the ester moiety, divinylbenzene, and hydrophilic monomers bearing charged groups, viz., styrylmethyl(trimethyl)ammonium and styrylmethyl(tributyl)ammonium cations. The latexes were catalytically active in reactions of decarboxylation of 6-nitrobenzioxazole-3-carboxylate (Scheme 6) and p-nitrophenyl hexanoate hydrolysis (Scheme 7, n = 6). [Pg.196]

Apart from epoxy resins, reactive diluents and epi-chlorohydrin, other compounds containing at least one epoxy group in their molecules are also potential causes of contact allergy. Examples of these epoxy compounds include glycidyl methacrylate (Matura et al. 1995 Fig. 6), epoxy propane [CAS 75-56-9] (Steinkraus and Hausen 1994 Morris et al. 1998), 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (EPTMAC) [CAS 3033-77-0] (Estlander et al. 1997) and trans-y (4-methoxyphenyl)glycidate (Buisson et al. 1991). [Pg.574]
