The collection and use of lac by Indian aboriginal tribes probably predates recorded history. Ancient Greek and Roman writers were aware of lac. By the late fifteenth century, European craftsmen were attracted to the use of lac as a finish for cabinets and other furniture because of its gloss and luster. [Pg.141]

One of the reasons the tribes of early history were nomadic was to move periodically away from the stench of the animal, vegetable, and human wastes they generated. When the tribesmen learned to use fire, they used it for millennia in a way that filled the air inside their living quarters with the products of incomplete combustion. Examples of this can still be seen today in some of fhe more primitive parts of the world. After its invention, the chimney removed the combustion products and cooking smells from the living quarters, but for centuries the open fire in the fireplace caused its emission to be smoky. In ad 61 the Roman philosopher Seneca reported thus on conditions in Rome ... [Pg.3]

Prior to the eastern adventures of Linschoeten and Tradescant, the sailors of Columbus had discovered the natives of Central America playing with lumps of natural mbber. These were obtained, like gutta percha, by coagulation from a latex the first recorded reference to natural mbber was in Valdes La historia natural y general de las Indies, published in Seville (1535-1557). In 1731 la Condamine, leading an expedition on behalf of the French government to study the shape of the earth, sent back from the Amazon basin mbber-coated cloth prepared by native tribes and used in the manufacture of waterproof shoes and flexible bottles. [Pg.2]

Rotenone is a common insecticide that strongly inhibits the NADH-UQ reductase. Rotenone is obtained from the roots of several species of plants. Tribes in certain parts of the world have made a practice of beating the roots of trees along riverbanks to release rotenone into the water, where it paralyzes fish and makes them easy prey. In the United States, the threshold mercury concentration for commercial sale of fish is determined by the Food and Drag Administration, whereas consumption advice for recreational (noncommercial) fish is developed by individual states and tribes. Mercury data collected for development of fish-consumption advisories are typically from analyses of filets (axial muscle tissue, with or without skin) for total mercury, with concentrations expressed on a wet-weight basis. Analysis of filets for total mercury yields a valid estimate of MeHg concentration (Grieb et al. 1990 Bloom 1992), whether the analyzed sample consists of a large filet or a small mass of tissue obtained with a biopsy needle (Cizdziel et al. 2002 Baker et al. 2004). [Pg.93]
