Endosulfan has been identified in at least 164 of the 1,577 hazardous waste sites that have been proposed for inclusion on the EPA National Priorities List (NPL) (HazDat 2000). However, the number of sites evaluated for endosulfan is not known. The frequency of these sites can be seen in Figure 5-1. Of these sites, 87 are located in the United States, one is located in Guam, and one is located in the Virgin Islands (not shown). 

The survey does not include laboratories in Guam, Puerto Rico, or Virgin Islands. One or more parasites were found in 14.7% of specimens. Percentages are not calculated for parasites identified less than 100 times.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies the most serious hazardous waste sites in the nation. These sites make up the National Priorities List (NPL) and the sites are targeted for long-term federal cleanup. Chloroform has been found in at least 717 of the 1,430 current or former NPL sites, including 6 in Puerto Rico and 1 in the Virgin Islands. However, it s unknown how many NPL sites have been evaluated for this substance. As more sites are evaluated, the sites with chloroform may increase. This is important because exposure to this substance may harm you and because these sites may be sources of exposure. 

The Center for Disease Control publishes an Annual Survey of Foodborne Disease for the fifty states, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands. The number of confirmed outbreaks listed for 1976 through 1980 ranged from three to 19 per year. The number of outbreaks listed for 1980 (10), the latest available survey, was at the high end, namely 15 and involved 52 individuals. Please note fifteen outbreaks and 52 individuals. 

The present paper reports on the development of a culture collection of potentially toxic dinoflagellates from the Virgin Islands, large-scale culture and screening for toxicity in nine species, and a more detailed consideration of the toxic properties of G. toxicus and P. concavum. 

Study area. Over 70 separate sites in the Virgin Islands were surveyed (Figure 1). These sites represented a wide variety of habitat types, namely live and dead coral reefs, open sand bottoms landward and seaward of reefs, protected coves and bays, areas variously exposed to surf, mangrove stands, and salt ponds.

Except for sanguineum, the above named species represent cosmopolitan and frequently dominant epiphytic/benthic dinoflagel-lates in the Virgin Islands. Gymnodinium sanguineum is one of the few common planktonic species in the study area. All of these species are readily accessible to herbivorous fishes throughout the Virgin Island chain.
