Primary treatment (solid settling and removal) is required, secondary treatment (use of bacteria and aeration to enhance organic degradation) is becoming more routine, and tertiary treatment (filtration through activated carbon, applications of ozone, and chlorination) has been, or is being, implemented by all refineries.

Juice solids have a critical effect not only on wine quality (discussed under juice clarification) but also on yeast activity. A juice that is too clean, from excessive pectic enzyme treatment, filtration, or centrifuging, may have difficulty completing fermentation. Groat and Ough (24) and others have reported that juice solids levels below 0.1 to 0.5 percent resulted in slower fermentations. Levels of 0.5-2.5 percent solids are used commonly in the North Coast.

Disinfection is the most important part of water treatment. Filtration and coagulation afford a material that is pleasant to look at, but it is disinfection that makes the water safe to drink. Disinfection kills any bacteria and viruses which have escaped filtration but, at least as important, it prevents recontamination during the time the water is in the distribution system. In the suburbs of a large city, the water may remain in the distribution system for five days or more before it is drunk. Five days is plenty of time for any missed microorganisms to multiply furthermore, leaks and breaks in the water mains permit recontamination, especially at the extremities of the distribution systems where the water pressure is low.

The industrial production of fruit juices entails a number of technological treatments that can affect the phenolic compounds of the processed products and their antioxidant potential. These treatments include enzymatic digestion, concentration, heat treatment, filtration, etc. 

Consumer demand insists on wines that are clear and stable. However, wine quality may be affected by too much, ill-advised treatment. Filtration is known to have potentially harmful effects and is particularly criticized for making wines thinner. Filtration just before bottling is sometimes challenged on these grounds, but this criticism is often unjustified. Properly controlled filtration has positive effects on quality, whereas careless or excessive treatment may have a decidedly negative impact. In filtration, as in all other treatments applied to wine, proper conditions and care are essential. Winemakers are responsible for deciding precisely which operations are necessary. 

The wine s instability may be affected by varions treatments (filtration, fining, etc.) carried out prior to electrodialysis.

Cleaning-up processes of tannery effluents usually include (i) a primary or chemical-physical treatment (coarse screen, equalization and chemical-physical precipitation with sedimentation and sludge separation) (ii) a secondary or biological treatment with partial or total recycle of sludge and their separation and (iii) a tertiary treatment (filtration, stripping, redox processes) (Cassano et al., 2001).

From the practical viewpoint regarding the cost of a photocatalytic treatment of water, the possible higher efficiency of suspended Ti02 relative to that of Ti02 films can prevail over the separation cost of the Ti02 powder at the end of the treatment. Filtration on a ceramic membrane - which does not need to be cleaned -and continuous reuse of Ti02 have also been patented and claimed to be cost-effective (http //www.purifics.com).
