Transparency and Openness

As stated in our Values and Principles, BASF is committed to an open dialog within the company, with its business partners and neighbors, and with society. For BASF, dialog means providing insights, accounting for our activities, and actively seeking debate with those who have other opinions. Transparency and openness are important instruments to establish trust. 

Plastic. A plastic bag usuaUy consists of a single heavy waU of plastic film, woven sheets of plastic tape, or laminates. Principal materials of constmction are polyethylene and polypropylene (see Fibers, olefin). Both transparent and opaque sheeting are used, and printabUity usuaUy is exceUent. Plastic bags can be fiUed and closed with conventional equipment beat-sealing is essential for open-mouthed bags to effect a moisture barrier. 

Accountability and transparency have several aspects reporting to and control by supervisory bodies clarity and openness of procedures criteria for decision-making and decisions made and existence of systems for complaint and appeal. Accountability and transparency can be evaluated by examining, in particular reporting requirements, external reviews of the authority s performance frequency of publications and content of website (and other means of communication between the DRA, the public and the regulated parties) bodies to which complaints are directed and appeals procedures. However, the individual details of these elements of regulation make quantitative comparison difficult. 

Although Carothers was transparent and innocently open about his insecurities and mental health, many of his young colleagues stood in awe of him. Thus, when Carothers showed Julian Hill his capsule of cyanide, Hill interpreted it as bravado. More ominously, Carothers could list the famous scientists who had committed suicide. 

Such sharing and openness also is reflected in Infosys s commitment to complete transparency in financial and operational aspects. For instance, Infosys reports its financial results to conform to the GAAP of seven different countries around the world. Infosys s director of Customer Delivery revealed another aspect of transparency We are open about our processes and knowledge. For instance, we have published a book on CMM which explains most of our practices. We are also happy to share our knowledge with customers and anyone else who asks. ... 

This patent also extends to the production of the gum in lumps, so as to resemble natural gum both in color and transparency and for this purpose the powder is mixed, after it has gone through the stove and beeu sifted, with as much water as will bring it to the consistence of a paste, adding one part of nitric acid to each four hundred parta of water. When well mixed, the paste is spread upon copper dishes, in layers three-fourths of an inch deep, and subjected, in an oven, to a heat of 240° to 300°. As soon as it haB become sufficiently hard, it is removed from the oven into the open air, and when cool, is ready for use. 

When the tin is opened, the reaction is tested in different parts of the product with litmus paper the reaction should be faintly acid, any marked alkalinity rendering the product suspicious. The liquid should be gelatinous and transparent and its odour and taste and also those of the meat should be normal and pleasant. The internal condition of the meat is examined, the colour and consistency of a fresh cut and any formation of gas-bubbles being noted. 

A recent innovation in thin-film detectors has appeared on the commercial market in which a standard Si(Li) detector is protected by an apparently strong, X-ray transparent and radiation insensitive thin-film. The exact nature and composition of this thin-film is yet to be disclosed in the open literature. However, according to manufacturer s reports [13] this detector window allows transmission of boron X-rays (0.185kv for Ka) and can be operated at atmospheric pressure. In a typical spectrum from this type of detector provided by the manufacturer, a strong oxygen Ka line as well as well-defined Si, Al and Na peaks can be observed for albite (NaAlSi Og). Since these detectors have only recently been installed in the field, details of performance have yet to be reported by users. 

Recently, field-effect transistors based on zinc oxide were reported [173,174], opening the opportunity to design microelectronic devices that are transparent and/or work at high temperatures [175]. More details on thin film transistors employing transparent conducting oxides are given in Chap. 2.
