Vat Dyes. AppUed to ceUulosic fibers, vat dyes yield prints with exceUent fastness properties. They are used to print furnishings, drapes, and camouflage where their iafrared reflectance resembles natural terrain and foUage. Their appUcation can foUow two different procedures. [Pg.372]

Bradshaw and his coworkers have listed several motivations for their explorations in this area. One objective of [the] research program is to prepare and study a series of multi-dentate compounds which resemble naturally occurring macrocyclic compounds . Further, Bradshaw and his coworkers have said that it is our hope that we can prepare macrocycles to mimic the selectivities of the naturally occurring cyclic antibiotics and thereby make available models for the investigation of biological cation transportation and selectivity processes . These workers have presented a number of comparisons with valinomy-cin . The other expressly stated goal of their research is to prepare molecules which will allow us to systematically examine the parameters which affect complex stability and to understand that stability in terms of AH and TAS values for complex formation . [Pg.220]

Hypnotics induce states of drowsiness and facilitate the onset and continuation of sleep resembling natural sleep [32]. Central nervous system (CNS) functions, in addition to the maintenance of wakefulness, are usually depressed by these drugs. Barbiturates, clinically... [Pg.711]

In the next few years Staudinger repeatedly demonstrated that polymerization lead to long chains of primary or covalently bonded monomers. He also showed these synthetic materials often resembled natural materials in many significant chemical and physical properties. [Pg.34]

Constructed wetlands are engineered systems designed to mimic the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms of a natural wetland. Wetlands may be constructed above ground to resemble natural wetlands such as swamps, bogs, and marshes or they may treat contaminated water below the surface. Constructed wetlands have been used for the ex situ treatment of groundwater contaminated with explosives. [Pg.476]

It was not until 1955 that a process was developed for the synthesis- of an elastomer closely resembling natural rubber and the technological methods for the use of this elastomer in the compound were disclosed. This... [Pg.409]

This patent also extends to the production of the gum in lumps, so as to resemble natural gum both in color and transparency and for this purpose the powder is mixed, after it has gone through the stove and beeu sifted, with as much water as will bring it to the consistence of a paste, adding one part of nitric acid to each four hundred parta of water. When well mixed, the paste is spread upon copper dishes, in layers three-fourths of an inch deep, and subjected, in an oven, to a heat of 240° to 300°. As soon as it haB become sufficiently hard, it is removed from the oven into the open air, and when cool, is ready for use. [Pg.314]

The sublimation curve 6 of the system As-S (fig. 12) was obtained from analyses of the vapour in contact -with the boiling liquid. A saturated solution of arsenic in realgar boils at 534° C. and a liquid of composition As2S3 resembles natural orpiment in boiling at 707° C. [Pg.237]

Recent hyperbolic tower designs have included fans for intermittent operation. This type tower combines the features of both natural-draft and mechanical-draft towers. These resemble natural-draft systems in that they employ a hyperbolic shell however, they are smaller and have large... [Pg.75]

The public prayer for all is long, and it is poured forth to heaven. For this reason the altar is round and is divided crosswise by ways at right angles to one another. By these ways Hoh enters after he has repeated the four prayers, and he prays looking up to heaven. And then a great mystery is seen by them. The priestly vestments are of a beauty and meaning like to those of Aaron. They resemble nature and they surpass Art. [Pg.72]

Drugs that act as nucleoside analogues mimic the activity of nucleosides while lacking full function. Because nucleoside analogues structurally resemble natural nucleosides, the analogues (1) do not passively diffuse across a membrane and (2) can readily hitch a ride across the membrane by means of an ENT and/or a CNT. Several nucleoside analogues and their corresponding carrier proteins are shown in Table 3.8.14... [Pg.52]

Polymerization of pyrogallol (measurement of optical density) ring cleavage of pyrogallol and catechol (measurement of C02 release) yields of humic polymers IR and 13C CPMAS NMR spectra resembling natural HAs... [Pg.74]

Polymerization of phenolic compounds (measurement of optical density) IR spectra resembling natural humic substances yields of humic polymers measurement of 02 uptake... [Pg.74]

Researchers are also exploring ways of using inorganic materials, especially those closely related to natural hone material, for artificial bone filling. Interpore International of Irvine, California, for example, received approval in 1992 for its hydroxyapatite-based hone substitute called Pro Osteon. The material is made from coral that has been heated to temperatures of about 2000°C to obtain hydroxyapatite (a primary component of coral) of 95 percent purity. The material is then formed into a scaffolding resembling natural bone, and this final product is irradiated with gamma rays to sterilize it. [Pg.60]
