Train the Trainer

Regardless of who undertakes a "train the trainer" project at your company, keep a couple of criteria in mind timeliness and shelf-life. Timeliness speal to the need to develop the curriculum and get it out into the field as quickly as possible once the PSM system is hnalized. Shelf-life refers to the usabili of the program over time it should be adaptable to accommodate changes or additions to the system to avoid the expense of a complete revision. 

Developing train-the-trainer programs for department trainers... 

In order to meet the 21 CFR 211.25 requirements, departmental trainers must complete a train-the-trainer program. An outline of topics to be covered in a typical train-the-trainer program is shown in Figure 7.

The resources responsible for implementing SCM techniques and processes should be chosen carefully and developed using a train-the-trainer concept, and should regularly be assigned to subsequent sub-projects within the program, to achieve the highest impact in the shortest possible time. 

I was the consultant hired by UNAIDS to assist in the creation of its new Diversity and Inclusion Policy, having previously delivered global diversity training and train-the-trainer sessions for the organization. I had been doing similar training work at both the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO). 

With the approval of the Diversity and Inclusion Policy, UNAIDS has committed resources to promulgate it through training and communication. A half-day diversity and inclusion workshop has been successfully piloted with senior management (buy-in from the top is critical) and with some headquarters staff train-the-trainer sessions have been held with internal trainers to prepare them to run the workshops across all regions of the world and to enable leaders to communicate and explain the Diversity and Inclusion Policy in every country office in which UNAIDS operates. 

NCTL provides professional development programs for in-service teachers and administrators. Using a train the trainer model, NCTL partners with states, so that the professional development capacity can meet the demands according to the level of need in each state. In addition, NCTL works with universities to assist them in curriculum and program development for pre-service teachers. 

The instructor performing the qualification training must be an individual who has demonstrated necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities by regularly conducting DOT alcohol tests as a BAT for a period of at least 1 year, or who has successfully completed a train the trainer course. 

They should develop a train-the-trainer program to assist the local managers in providing the appropriate training for their persoimel.

Another environment which offers a very practical learning center is the actual commercial motor vehicle. If the training will be taking place in the commercial motor vehicle there are several factors you will need to consider. Three of the main factors are setting objectives, training the trainers, and selecting trainers.

Communications skills. This is a critical area in a TTT program. In general, you will be training drivers who have traditionally worked by themselves. If you do not train the trainers in good communication techniques, they cannot do the job of a trainer. 

First, being a trainer requires the ability to communicate. The trainer may meet all of the other criteria, but if he/she cannot communicate to the trainees what the objectives and goals are, how they are doing, and what they need to improve on, the trainer cannot do his/her job. You will be training the trainers on communications, but you will want to make sure the individuals selected have some communications abilities to start with. 

Instructors. Instructors should be deemed competent on the basis of previous documented experience in their area of instruction, successful completion of a train-the-trainer program specific to the topics they will teach, and an evaluation of instructional competence by the Training Director. 

The same content can be delivered on- and ofif-the-job. On-the-job may involve one-on-one training under a supervisor or other experienced employee, but these should have had train-the-trainer training, i.e. training in how to train, and assess competency.
