In addition to its function as a marker for chronology, a pottery repertory is always used to identify the people who made it and, by inference, its provenance. Pottery of local styles is to be expected, but more often than not vessels that are not indigenous to the area also appear—sometimes in large numbers. Pottery of foreign styles may simply reveal ancient trade patterns, which in itself is important. However, much more is learned from the full array of pottery when examined in conjunction with everything else noted in the stratum. In this connection, the architectural remains have a special importance. 

With regard to exporting countries, the Board is pleased to note that during 2005, authorities in Poland started providing pre-export notifications for shipments of potassium permanganate. As Poland is currently a major exporter of the substance, the provision of such notifications will provide the Board with further valuable information on international trade patterns. 

The provision of pre-export notifications has resulted in the identification of the complex trade patterns that exist for acetic anhydride, with, in particular, tank farms being used in trans-shipment countries to store large amounts of the substance prior to dispatching smaller consignments to traders and/or end-users. Global marketplace The global marketplace is a distribution issue. In fact, in today s world there is no choice but to understand the global strategy implications on all distribution decisions. Observing the trading patterns of a liquid market in inflation-indexed bonds enables analysts to draw conclusions about nominal versus real interest rates and to construct an inflation term structure. Such analysis is problematic, since conventional and indexed bonds typically differ considerably in liquidity. Nevertheless, as explained above, it is usually possible to infer market estimates of inflation expectations from the difference between the yields of the two types of bonds. 

Much study has been made on obsidian, whose production can often be linked to a specific volcanic eruption on the basis of the trace and minor element composition [101,102]. The results of such a study are important both for understanding trade patterns in obsidian artifacts, and for identifying the occurrence of tephra in stratigraphic layers, thus providing a basis for chronological information. 

In chapter 11, Tykot uses electron microprobe analysis to determine the major and minor elements in obsidian collected from sources throughout the Mediterranean region. Through statistical analysis, he is able to differentiate these sources and, thereby, is able to identify the sources of archaeological obsidian artifacts found in the region. Combining these data with contextual data, the relative frequency of particular obsidians in different sites can be used to infer that complex trade patterns existed in the Early Neolithic.
