As abuse of these mushrooms increases worldwide, more data is available on the serious side effects. In a 2000 Swiss Toxicological Information Center (STIC) study, researchers examined 161 acute Psilocybe mushroom exposures in which people intentionally ate magic mushrooms. The median age of the person seeking medical attention was 20 years (range 14—56). According to the researchers, Reasons for hospitalization were marked hallucinations, hyperexcitability, panic attacks, coma, and convulsions. As good trips turn bad and euphoria turns to fear and panic, there is no antidote or antitoxin that can make it go away. In a 2000 study which examined 161 acute psilocybin mushrooms exposures reported to the Swiss Toxicological Information Center (STIC), researchers noted that severe complications from psilocybin use were most likely to occur when it was combined with other drugs such as opioids, alcohol, or LSD. The Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) [70] is a database of toxicological information compiled, maintained, and updated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Japan s Ministry of International Trade has published several books with detailed information on biodegradation tests of several hundred chemicals. This information has now also been made available by the Japan Chemical Industry Ecology-Toxicology and Information Center (JETOC) see Chapter 14 for more details on the MITI biodegradation database. The JETOC also published a compendium of mutagenicity test data of several hundred chemicals.
