Good and bad trips

Psychedelics alter consciousness in psychopathological directions, but because they are (mostly) reversible, they constitute round-trip tickets to and from forbidden zones in brain-mind space. There are good trips and bad trips. Good trips are characterized by altered perceptions and enhanced mood bad trips by altered perceptions, fear, anxiety, and depressed—or violent—mood. LSD, the psychedelic drug par excellence, can cause both good and bad trips, depending on the individual taking it, the expectations and context of the taker, and the dose and purity of the LSD.

So dreaming can be a good trip (ecstatic elation as in my second ski run is not uncommon) or a bad trip (with negative emotions like anxiety, fear, and anger always popping up). This means that dreaming is both heaven and hell (or that heaven and hell are virtual realities that are fabricated by us to mirror the virtual reality of our dream experiences). This... 

Many complain that the "good teen-ager" has had a bad press, that his image has been ruined by a few bad teen-agers. The fact is that the good teen-ager is not news, because he is not exceptional. By the same coin, a good trip on LSD is not news either. But a bad trip that s news. And a bad trip that ends in suicide or a psychotic break that s really news. 

The personal perils an investigator faces in attempting develop a state-specific science are of two kinds those associated with reactions colloquially called a bad trip and a good trip. 

Marijuana can cause paranoia in many people. As a result, it is not considered a good mix with LSD because paranoia can bring on a bad trip. According to research conducted by the NIDA, the combination of LSD and marijuana may bring on psychosis in teenagers. 

From the very first, however, it was apparent that not everyone who takes LSD has a good time. Some people had bad trips they became anxious and panicky, afraid they were losing their minds and would be unable to return to ordinary reality. They almost always did return, when the drug wore off twelve hours later, but some of them remained depressed and anxious for days afterward, and a few had lasting psyehological problems.
