Towers piping supports

A vertical reboiler has very little piping and its length determines the height of the tower skirt. Supports at grade are saved but supports on the tower must be added. 

The liquid outlet is located on the bottom head of die tower. If the tower is supported by a skin, the nozzle is routed outside the sldrt. As with the vapor outlet, more than one nozzle may be specified. The elevation of the nozzle is dictated by the constraints discussed previously in this chapter. The orientation can be at any angle, but generally it is dictated by pump suction piping flexibility. Exhibit 10-33 shows a typical bottom head arrangement. 

An innovation is a direct-contact condenser mounted on the vapor body. A short piece of vertical pipe connects the vapor body with the condenser to minimize piping and pressure drop. This design also eliminates structural steel for support of a separate condenser. For cooling tower applications, the hotwell is elevated to permit gravity flow of water from the hotwell to the top of the cooling tower, thus eliminating the need for a pump.

Distillation is the dominant separation process in the petroleum and chemical industries. It is carried out continuously more often than batchwise, in large, vertical, hollow cylindrical columns (or towers). Figure 1 shows a large distillation column with its associated piping, heat exchangers, vessels, ladders, platforms, and support structures. Figure 2 shows a simple schematic representation. 

After the failure of the Texas Tower TT-4, an important step forward was taken in the 1960s when oil drilling and related installations of pipelines at depths up to 60 m off the Mississippi Delta were begun. These installations were designed based on a more fundamental understanding of sediment properties. Oil platforms off the Mississippi Delta are of the jacket or template type which are supported by a long open-ended steel pipe pile foundation. 

Welding of supports shall not be half complete before loading in internals such as trays, tower packings, catalysts on trays, internal cooling coils, and provision of external fittings and connecting gas and liquid pipes. 

Adequate space must be provided between piping and between the bade of piping and the tower shell to facilitate the installation of pipe suj its, which are attached to die tower. Exhibit 10-52 displays some typical supports fix tower pipii ...
