Princeton Polymer Laboratories has discovered that mixtures of a metallic organic compound and a photoactivator produce a degradative effect in certain polymers that may be as much as ten fold greater than that produced by the individual compounds. The ratio of the components, type of plastic and total amount of additive are some of the important factors that affect the time to failure. Because of this strong synergistic effect, the amount of additive required is quite small, thus resulting in a very low cost, which has been estimated at less than 0.1 cent per pound of finished plastic.

In addition to gasification, other oxidative treatments of plastic and rubber wastes, excluding total combustion, are described in this chapter. These methods, although relatively unknown, may be of great interest in the future for the chemical degradation of polymeric wastes. 

The major application for epoxidized oils made by these means is their use as polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-plasticizers and stabilizers because of their ability to catch free HCl and slow degradation. Additionally, they can be used as reactive diluents for paints and as intermediates for polyurethane-polyol production. The most important product today is epoxidized soybean oil.
