Total Commitment

A chief executive and his fellow managers can either give minimum commitment to the safety movement or maximum commitment and support. A successful change of safety culture needs both initial and ongoing management support as well as buy-in from the unions and employees. Line management must take the lead and be active participants. 

The initiative to launch and maintain safety momentum is required from top management, and so is the leadership and ongoing support necessary to prevent downgrading accidents that lead to losses.

It is for this reason that the Chief Executive Officers of every West European chlor-alkali producer have, through Euro Chlor, entered voluntarily into six binding commitments [15]. All but one of these are unconditional. In this sense they do not represent part of some kind of negotiation rather, they are an attempt to demonstrate by action that the industry, whatever its past, is now totally committed to addressing public concerns about its use of the mercury process. It matters not that these concerns are almost entirely without foundation they are there, and we have to address them. 

That pharmaceutical manufacturers are now totally committed to cGMPs as a fact of life, reluctantly admitted by the newer and inexperienced biopharmaceutical technology-based companies. Indeed, there are examples of young companies going out of business because they felt that this was an unnecessary bureaucratic process that would hinder the application of their wonderful new product. This attitude was perilous in the extreme because, ultimately, the FDA has to approve the drug and its process before it can be marketed. 

Executive management total commitment to quality and the quality audit program... 

The importance of these background presuppositions in Marx can hardly be stressed too much. Although only a small part of his written work deals with them, they gave him the essential motivation for a lifetime of hardship and struggle. There are no signs that he ever wavered in his total commitment to the ideal of communism and his Hrm belief that it would inevitably come about. In addition to motivation, these beliefs also provided a powerful source of bias in his thought. His theory of human... 

If a metabolic pathway involves, say, 12 consecutive reactions, normally this will mean that there is a set of 12 different enzymes, i.e. 12 different specialised protein molecules, to catalyse the 12 reactions. Each one is totally committed to its one reaction. This also means that the whole pathway can be blocked if any one of the enzymes is not there or somehow is switched off. 

Environment nurtures total commitment from all employees. 

At the beginning of 1998, it was decided to make a total commitment to this project (fast studies and execution of sodium treatment and dismantling) while at the same time observing the safety and regulatory aspects. This option also met a keen requirement of the Department of the Environment for a technically irreversible operation so that reactor restart would no longer be an option. 

A common factor in all accredited safety management systems (SMS) is an element that calls for management leadership and commitment to the safety and health process. It is almost guaranteed that any attempt to change or improve the safety culture at any workplace will fail if there is not total commitment, leadership, and management involvement from the executive right down to and including frontline supervision.

Determination and dedication Starting a social enterprise is extremely difficult. Total commitment and personal sacrifice are required. 

For Quality Circles to succeed, there must be total commitment from upper management, so that whatever the Circle has suggested will be implemented, or a good reason given why it could not, thereby providing encouragement for the Circle members. Circle members receive no direct financial reward for their improvements. 

The Patient and Family Advisory Council at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was created in the late 1990s with fifteen patients and family members who agreed to one-year terms renewable for up to three years. Several members participated and shared voting privileges. Members made the commitment to attend one meeting per month and to participate in the work of at least one subcommittee, for a total commitment of fewer than ten hours per month. 

To assess the total committed (internal) dose, the results obtained from each pathway (inhalation, ingestion, different foodstuffs, and radionuclides, etc.) are to be summed. In radiation protection, the total committed dose due to a whole year s uptake is determined and monitored systematically. 

As a corporate citizen, Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) - a major producer of ethylene, polyethylene and sulphur - is totally committed to reducing its impact on the environment and operating in line with international environmental standards. 

The incident has also contributed to the company s determination to work harder at creating a culture of safety that is, an environment in which even the lowest level supervisors are totally committed to safety and will not tolerate any departures from safe practice. 

Management leadership and employee involvement are tied together because one is not effective without the other. Management can be totally committed, but if employees follow blindly or are not involved, problems will be solved only temporarily.

Involvement in the safety program by the CEO and other members of management is not snfhcient, total commitment to the loss prevention movement is reqnired. Participation at safety fnnctions, during safety inspections, and ongoing safety control activities is important. 

Most levels of management are involved in safety on a day-to-day basis. This involvement does not necessarily mean they are contributing enough. Total commitment is what is reqnired of all levels of management, especially the executive. 

When asked the difference between commitment and involvement, a world-renowned safety practitioner answered, The next time you have a plate of bacon and eggs for breakfast, remember that the chicken was involved in the process, but the pig was totally committed. ... 

Top management commitment means that organizational quality cannot exist without the total commitment of the top executive team.
