Torch-Cutting Operations

Using a cutting torch in a warehouse can also generate sparks, heat, fire, fumes, gases, and exposures harmful to the lungs, eyes, skin, and body. There are specific guidelines for the use of cutting torches that could be applied directly to warehouse operations. [Pg.327]

Plasma arc cutting operates on the principle of passing an electric arc through a quantity of gas through a restricted outlet. The electric arc heats the gas as it travels through the arc. This turns the gas into a plasma that is extremely hot. It is the heat in the plasma that heats the metal. A typical power source for plasma arc cutting is about the size of a small transformer welder and comes equipped with a special torch, as shown in Figure 24.29. [Pg.500]

It should be noted that the use of open-flame torches and welding machines is not a part of normal warehouse operations. This type of work must be left to those that have the skills and training. The use of torches and welding can easily start a fire. Every precaution must be taken to ensure that the work area is free of combustibles, flammables, and any other ignition source. Even when the job has been completed, a fire watch should be in place to ensure the safety of the building and employees. If hot work inside the space is interrupted, special precautions should be implemented. Disconnect power to arc welding or cutting units and remove the electrode from the holder. Turn off torch valves and shut off the gas supply to gas welding or cutting units at a point outside. Remove the torch and hose from the space, if possible. In industrial applications, oxy-fuel cutting is the predominant flame process for cutting mild- and low-alloy steels (see Fig. 2.33). With the right gases, a good torch and a steady hand, this process enables an experienced operator to cut steel anywhere, as it does not require electricity or complicated equipment. The ampoule sorption vessel is designed for slow dissolution process and for wetting operation [43, 56].
