Topography and Roughness

Surface roughness of devices contacting living systems will influence their biological reactivity. The relationship between surfaces is especially critical in CL appHcations as the polymer should interfere as least as possible with the epithelial surface of the cornea and with the Hd conjunctiva. A smooth surface is essential to promote biocompatibility between CL and the ocular surface.

No obvious difference in surface topography and roughness was found between the fiber... 

Addition of Si02 NPs into electrospim fibers was found to change fiber surface topography and roughness by creating wrinkles and nanoscaled protrusions on the surface of the nanofibers. Such fibers can find useful application as air filtration media with improved performances [15]. 

Parameters measured Surface topography (rms roughness, rms slope, and power spectrum of structure) scattered light line shape of periodic structure (width, side wall angle, height, and period)... 

The sample is measured with a confocal microscope, by using a chromatic coding of the height, and with a contact-less optical needle focused on the surface. We determine by this way the surface topography and its roughness. 

Figure 10 shows this effect. At the left side the topography and a line scan of the uncoated fiber reinforced material is shown. At the right side of Fig. 10 the roughness of the clearcoat, coated directly on the substrate and dried under varying conditions is represented. The higher drying temperature causes a more distinct surface structure. 

Fig. 15.13 shows a bonding map for silicon wafer bonding combinations of topography and spatial wavelength that fall below the traces will bond those above the traces will produce voids [101]. This and further work by Turner et al. have explored parameters for direct wafer bonding under clamped conditions [107], addressed wafer bow and etch pattern considerations [108], as well as nanoscale roughness considerations [101].
