It is the 1 1 sulfate salt of an alkaloid obtained from the plant Vinca rosea Linn. (Catharanthus roseus G. Don) of the family Apocynaceae, better known as Madagascar periwinkle. Frequently the name is abbreviated to VLB sulfate. It is also identified by the code numbers NSC-49812 and 29060-LE4. The elucidation of the molecular structure, stereochemistry, and absolute configuration of this interesting compound is fully documented in the literature5 7 8. [Pg.445]

Early and current efforts originating in the United States for standardization of chemical nomenclature on both a national and international level are reviewed. Committees sponsored by the National Research Council, which is the official organization for dealing with the IUPAC, and ACS committees correlate work to achieve consistency. These committees, with names and addresses of chairmen, are listed. British-U. S. cooperation on standardizing nomenclature, which resulted in joint adoption of ten rules in 1923, has been renewed. Nomenclature information is published in ACS periodicals and in eighteen pamphlets which are available from Chemical Abstracts. [Pg.55]

The generic name of a drug is not derived from systematic nomenclature. The group responsible for most generic names in the United States is the U.S. Adopted Names (USAN) Council, a private organization founded by the American Medical Association, the American Pharmacists Association, and the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention. [Pg.70]
