On a more general note, the workshop concluded that, although destruction deadlines cannot always be met, they are important. Deadlines help to focus the efforts of States Parties and ensure that sufficient funding for the destruction of chemical weapons is provided. Because of the potential danger to the public involved in the destruction of chemical weapons, which can have a major environmental and health impact on the communities concerned, most speakers stressed the importance of public outreach and information, given that this is a topic of public interest. In addition, the Convention points out that the protection of human health and of the environment is an essential precondition for the conduct of chemical weapons destruction operations.

References to the primary literature are provided for specific issues of structure, reactivity, and mechanism. These have been chosen to illustrate the topic of discussion and, of course, cannot be comprehensive. The examples and references chosen do not imply any priority of concept or publication. References to general reviews which can provide a broader coverage of the various topics are usually given. 

Lay people and experts disagree on risk estimates for many eiivironincntal problems. This creates a problem, since die public generally does not trust the experts. This chapter concentrates on how the public views risk and what the future of public risk perception will be. The reader should note that much of diis material, as with die previous Section, applies to liazard risk assessment- a topic that is treated in Chapter 19, Ptirt IV. 

The major headings in the Public Health Statement are useful to find specific topics of concern. The topics are written in a question and answer format. The answer to each question includes a sentence that will direct the reader to chapters in the profile that will provide more information on the given topic. 

It is worth noting that the past few years have witnessed tremendous development of web-based information resources. Notably, the PubMed search tool [4] has made the investigation of any life sciences topic much easier. It offers keyword and author (as well as structure and sequence) searches and covers a wide range of medicinal chemistry-related journals. This resource, coupled with e-journals, affords the medicinal chemist the tools to keep up with any research topics of interest. Because of the public nature of the Web, now a chemist can sometimes find critical journal articles on the Web that do not show up until much later in traditional literature sources. It is not uncommon that scientific meeting presentations can be found on the Web. Indeed, the Internet tools we have all become familiar with also have made the professional life of the medicinal chemist much easier.

A growing number of publications on this topic started to appear in a wide variety of scientific journals until, in 1981, the scientific journal Sensors and Actuators was initiated. Since then, it has become the main journal in this field. 

Here with, I am pleased to present to the public the ninth title in this Series, on a topic of great current concern. 

Undoubtedly, the chemistry of dendritic molecules has become more and more interesting and gained in importance as can be observed from an ever increasing number of publications on this topic in the chemical literature exceeding now 2000. 

The range of applications of expert systems in science is very wide, limited primarily by the considerable effort that is often needed to prepare one. Typical applications include the work of Pole, Ando, and Murphy on the prediction of the degradation of pharmaceuticals 1 Nuzillard and Emerenciano s work on structure elucidation from two-dimensional NMR data 2 the work of Patlewicz and co-authors on sensitization 3 and of Prine in another area connected to safety, that of MSDS data.4 The number of publications runs to several hundred per year, covering a great diversity of topics.
