Tile linings

High-quality bricks and tiles are used for lining vessels, ditches and to cover floors. The linings are usually backed with a corrosion-resistant membrane of rubber or plastic, placed behind the titles, and special acid-resistant cements are used for the joints. The chlorobenzene from the extraction stage is used for the next nitration batch. Chloronitrobenzene is sent to a tile-lined, 10 m3 washing tank. Here it is agitated three times with 3000 1. of water at 60-70°C by an air stream until neutral to Congo red. Then it is washed with 20 kg of sodium carbonate in 3000 1. of water, and finally with hot water to neutrality. The product is dried at 90-100°C under reduced pressure in a 7 m3 drying vessel heated by a heating coil. The yield is 98% of the theoretical. 

The most common practice is to line the steel vessel with lead as a corrosion resistant membrane barrier behind a ceramic brick or tile lining. The brick acts as a mechanical support for the lead as well as a thermal and wear resistant barrier to protect the weak soft lead from damage. 

Structural tile construction and tile lined steel construction are commonly used in the paper mill to handle the pulp and to handle the paper mill chemicals. The tile affords a relatively smooth surface, it will not contaminate the pulp, and is resistant to chemical corrosion. The tile can be set in Portland cement mortar, however, a resin mortar is frequently preferred since it will be more resistant to a broader range of chemicals. Resin cements also have greater strength and are somewhat more resistant to erosion.

To the nitrobenzene retained in the nitrator, there is add over a 3-hr period 5,000-6,000 kg of mixed acid (approximately 33 per cent HNO3, 67 per cent H2SO4), permitting a temperature rise from 25 to 40 C. The temperature is then raised to 90 C and maintained there for 1 hr or until free of nitrobenzene by the steam-distillation test. The charge is settled and the spent acid run into a large washer, where several batches are washed with nitrobenzene. The dinitrobenzene is delivered to a tile-lined or stainless-steel washer, provided with a lead cover and stirrer. Here, it is washed, first with 4,000 liters of hot water, then with caustic soda solution until neutral, and finally with water. 

The pure acid is delivered by air pressure from the MCA receiver, through silver pipelines to a plastic-coated, tile-lined, steam-jacketed vessel, from which it flows to a totally enclosed cast-iron drum flaker. The feed tank and flaker are both vented to a chimney through a baffle box. 

The ethylene chlorohydrin flows from the reaction tower through a side outlet, approximately 2 m below the top, and runs into tall tile-lined storage vessels, from which it is withdrawn for further processing. The crude chlorohydrin is obtained as a 4.5-5 per cent (by volume) solution and contains 2.2 per cent by volume of free hydrochloric acid for this strongly corrosive solution, plastic coatings have been found to be about the best material of construction. Lead is used for pipelines carrying the gases. 

Any leak from gland of externally installed pumps can be dangerous needs acid-/ alkali-resistant tile lining on foundation and surrounding area. Hence, they need mechanical seals for handling corrosive, inflammable liquids.

Provision of acid-/alkali-resistant tiles and water lines for washing sloping floors and tile-lined dyke walls around process units and tanks makes it easier to collect all liquids and recover them if possible. The spillages and floor washings which cannot be recovered shall be conveyed through suitable drains to effluent treatment plant. 

Most of the precautions to be taken for GL equipment are applicable to glass equipment also— with the added danger that the contents of the vessel can spill suddenly. Therefore, enclosures should be provided to arrest spillages (e.g. dyke walls, collection basin with AR tile lining) to prevent harm to personnel... 

Nonmetallic, composite, and ceramic materials are also used in paper machine construction, particularly on the wet forming end where low friction and dimensional stability are critical. Tile linings are used in tanks and wire pits, and corrosion-resistant coatings are used to protect the carbon steel structural beams in paper machines.
